Well, we can't write a novel with any ideas! Seriously, it is just not possible, unless you're Sigmund Freud! Actually, I'm kidding, I love Freud's work, the man is a genius.
Well, they say, "write what you know", and my first real work of literature (and a fanfic) was about a twentysomething musician, who finds love in Oakland. Yes, Oakland, and I like in Baltimore, Maryland. Whatever, it was like 2 years ago. Shut up!
Anyway, the point of this is to see what we should do. There will be more than one main character, because I am a lot better at writing about guys, because I know how we think. We all think alike... (scary).

Love in Oakland, huh? Well. I suggest planning out your characters, first. Then a story might start unfolding while you decide (or while it's decided for you) what kind of people your characters are.
Does that make sense?

Or maybe start with a setting... then have a character form around that, and then the other characters...
I dunno. I tried. =P

Then a story might start unfolding while you decide (or while it's decided for you) what kind of people your characters are. Does that make sense? I try to let the plot/characters surprize me. It's more fun that way because if you write the novel as it's going on in your head, its more real, like it is more realistic. Sometimes you bias what you want to happen, because you want it to happen, and its not probable. And this will be a different story anyway...

I understand. But I find, in my own writing, that I do better when I have my characters outlined. For instance, I'll roughly lay out their background, personalities, appearances. And then I place them somewhere in the setting, and from there see how they all interact. Their character profiles can change as the story progresses, as they evolve and whatnot.
Still, everyone's writing style is different. There really isn't one set way. So what else can you tell us about your story?

Your character needs to have a defined and noticable personality; your reader NEEDS to know what they are like and what kind of reactions they would give in certain situations. You don't want your reader to think you have Tourette's. The way they act is crucial, with a set background history of whatever you feel like.
Setting is another thing that is important; you don't want your reader to think that you're in the jungle when you're really just in the tub shaving your legs, does that make sense?
Plot is bendable, breakable, twistable, you can fry it, you can shrink it, you can send it into the fourth dimension; this is where YOUR personalized and stable character with set values and reactions and specific setting come into play. What can happen? Anything can happen, if your reader knows who you are and where you're at.

We need to have an idea that we all agree on, something we can all enjoy writing about... Like we need to choose a topic that's fun to write about...

Ahh, well I'm open to suggestions. I don't really have a preference, except I dont like historical, and not a bid fan of mushy romance either...
I was thinking in health class today, maybe an emo guy had this clingy girlfriend (or just friends), and he keeps trying to run away but she chases him, and they end up finding something our about themselves... Just an idea...

Moongem_19 I'm not partial to modern fiction but you are. I love historical fiction but you do. Jiji, well a story about a guy and his girlfriend is romance.
How about we make it a thriller or an action adventure story about a guy/girl or a pair of friends who learn something about themselves? I love those kind of stories! I guess it's because I'm interested in psychology...
