I have no big speech to go with this. I haven’t even taken a side myself. However, it was something a friend of mine said her class was debating, and so I decided to bring the topic here.
“Are humans naturally intrigued by violence?”
This seems straightforward enough. Feel free to take this any way you wish. Discuss.

>> Only the blackest of heartsWell, I do not doubt that as a species, we began very violent people - we killed people for entertainmnet, we go to war for no good reason, we sacrificed people in the name of religion, and... well, we killed animals for food/skins/furs/bones/etc.
Now we still go to war for stupid reason, mixing in with the proceeding statement, as we now commonly go to war BECAUSE of religion - we DO get entertainment out of watching people get killed, just simulated - but still VERY grotesque (if we didn't, the SAW movies and that new one... Dead Silence? wouldn't be so popular - not to mention J-Horror.. Takashi Miike (sp?) is one sick ********), and we still kill animals, although some people find that cruel *rolls eyes*. The death penalty is still allowed in many countries, or segments of them anyway, and when it comes to serial killers - people come to it and start yelling things like "Fry him!".
Do we get intrigued by violence? I'd say we probably are as a whole, but there are always going to be people who break away from that - and HOPEFULLY, as we become more civilized this will decrease - or... The Long Walk and Battle Royale will become our future. Can feel the purest of love <<

Of course we are intrigued by it. Have you watched the news? They wouldn't report half of those things if we, the people, weren't interested in it. There wouldn't be a prevailing genre of plotless horror, slasher, action movies if it weren't for the incredible violence. (Yes, I think SAW has no plot other than to be gruesome and icky.) Videogames like RE, SH, Siren and God of War wouldn't be too popular without all the violent monsters, zombies munching on people and a pale guy ripping off people's heads while impaling them with their own spine.
We are all intrigued, naturally, by violence to a certain extent. Such as, some people love the SAW movies. I, for instance, hate them all. I like Silent Hill, some people can't stand it. etc etc

Yeah, aside from Siren - I like everything you mentioned in your post... however, I pride myself in the fact that I am violent

I believe that humans find some weird kind of amusement when it comes to violence, but I don't believe they are naturally intrigged by violence. Some just figure it to be a easier way to do things (the reason of that being unknown), and some just find it funny when some guy gets shot in the leg (also unexplainable). But it doesn't mean every human is--- I mean, by the way you say it, you seem to be refering to all humans, which if you are I find it false.

It may just be impossible to refer to 'humans' as a whole. Everyone has different takes on violence; some hate it with a passion while others enjoy it to the fullest extent. If we're talking about the majority, then yes, I believe there are more who enjoy it than those who don't. Humans do seem to start war for pointless reasons at times, like hating another race, religion, culture -- I suppose one could say that's in our nature, but then there are always those who hate others not on the basis of stereotypes, but because they honestly deserve to be hated. (That's the basis I go by, anyway). On the subject of violent videogames and movies, many do seem to like them (teenagers, for the most part) while others (mainly a parent who's thrying to install good moral values) don't. Can such things enhance a person's destructive nature? Yes, and even give the murderers some new ideas, if that isn't just what we all needed. In my own case, considering movies, I look away from blood but cheer on the explosions, and in games, I can slash away at their monsters for hours (Castlevania = heart ). Such is the course of the human race...

Is this the cure?
Akira Kurosawa was the first director to have a blood spurt in a movie. In this scene the character refuses to fight a man but when pushed he ends up killing him. There is an audience and they are amazed by it. Then there is the audience actually watching the movie. Both are intrigued by the display before them. The main character then turns around and chides the audience who watched him kill the man. But in reality, it's Kurosawa chiding us. We love to see violence. Have you ever seen a small child react to someone they don't like being hit? Or someone they do like being hit? If there isn't a bunch of anger and danger to them, the child will laugh. It may seem Freudian for me to say this, but I believe we all naturally have some evil in us. We ARE intrigued by violence. It's impossible to deny. Or is it the disease?

Not all humans are intrigued by violence. Some of them hate it, and it even scares some people. Also, people who faint at the sight of blood... somehow I doubt they enjoy it. I don't like bloodspray, but explosions in movies have always amused me, though there are others who wouldn't like either.

It is perfectly natural. Up until about 1.8 million years ago, there were no humans -- just the other organisms we evolved from. These organisms hunted and killed each other regularly. It's no surprise that a remnant of that instinct is still in us, even though we can no longer act upon it. (we get food from supermarkets or stores -- can't very well hunt the stock boy down. xd )
