Description:

'Sea-Strength."

Zale's name almost perfectly sums up his talents and skills as a young, adventurous merman living the life of a pirate. Born around the isles of Greece, supposedly in the Aegean Sea, it was only natural his name be Greek. Though it is because of this origin that he is often associated by ignorant, jeering seamen with the mythological Oceanids and Nereids.

As a resulting concequence for living as a fish out of water, Zale has come to renounce his true race as his own. All he has gained through his connection with his underwater kin is bitter hostility and loathing from the humans that dominate the land.

He believes he is an outcast, separate from both humans and merfolk, as in his childhood he was abandoned on shore by his own kind for reasons unknown. His suspiciouns involve his differences between he and the fair-skinned, long-haired, graceul beings he was supposed to be kin to. They may have detested his strange appearence, varying from the typcal merchild.

Unfortunately, he had to learn to deal with his more obvious blue skin and stripes on his own as he made his way though the human world, with a rather tougher time of things than most merfolk who chose to walk on land. Strangely enough, his abandoning by his own kind seemed to drive him to want to fit in with humans even more. He learned to wear shoes to hide his webbed feet, and even how to wield a sword.

No matter how vast his emnity with the Merfolk, Zale always loved the sea. Though he gave up his life as its inhabiant long ago, he chooses to live with it as human seafarers do, and has never been able to travel too far inland without feeling discomfort. To his dismay, he has discovered he is only content when the ocean is in his sights and that no matter how human he ties to become, he can never sever his ties with the Mistress of the Sea herself.

Perhaps secretly, his apperant hatred for his kind only exists as a disguise for a mournful desire to be with them. Perhaps he wonders if someday he might return to his kind and that they might welcome him with open arms, despite his differences. Until that day, however, he chooses to live merely as a land-dweller with an unparalleled love for the ocean.
