I recently read this book and now I'm obsessed with it - I'm reading through the series and I've watched the movie and have even gone as far as to include it in one of my art projects. For anyone who is remotely interested in sci-fi then have a read - and for those who aren't it is remarkably accurate when you look at the way science is going at the moment.
If anyone has read it would you care to explain the whole Star cCid thing? I have ideas and thoughts but would like someone elses point of view to see how similar they are.

It's about the human point of view of our first encounter with another alien intelligence and our filure to fully comprehend it because of a veil of secrecy. At least that's my take on it.
If you mean the star Child/Dave Bowman thing, I think it's kind of an emesary between the thwo intelligences. Still human (or rather a copy of one) but given the intellectual capacity of the alien intelligence, or at least some of that of the monolith, so they can gauge how the rest of the specis would respond were there to be a meeting.

Yeah that was a good movie! I also read the book and it's sequels. I heard there's a second movie (a sequel to 2001)... wondering if its as good as the first one...
