Born in the 1832, age 14 when the great famine hits his town. Town [possible]: Cork- vast farmlands, good for stealing, at south, easy escape. Limerick- railways to Cork and Dublin, very interesting start.
Name [possible firsts]: Gilroy - "devoted to the king." Hagan - "youthful" or "young." Jarlath - (JAR-leth) Name of 6th C. saint, teacher of Saint Brendan the Navigator. Brendan told Jarlath to drive his chariot east and build a church where his wheel broke; it broke in Tuam, and he founded a church that became a great center of learning and art. Modern Irish Iarlaith (YAR-lath or YAHR-le).
[possible lasts]
Mackinnley - "son of the learned ruler."
Mael Iosu - "devotee of Christ"; at one time it was a name used among clergymen.
Monahan - "monk."
Premise/reminders:
Fourteen year old gang leader, gang name to be announced. Mostly ragamuffins that steal food from ships, storing and hording them. Their luck seems to change for the better as the famine strikes, and they sell the food for highly inflated costs. Eventually the leader, our main character, gets enough money to ride a filthy transport ship back to America, and paying a man to pose as his father, becomes a legalized American citizen.
A year later becomes a religious fanatic and, horrified with the oppression his kin are forced to endure, rallies them into a mob- again with him as the leader. The police officers kill most of the mob either right there, or later in jail. One cop goes to attack the boy, but he smashes his head in with a brick. Feeling overwhelming guilt for this he seeks to become a priest.
Prejudice follows him, and his Irish heritage causes one of the main priests at the seminary to hate him. Three years later, fails the test to become a priest, priest that hates him is blamed and killed. The now 18 year old main character runs away. Works at a factory and lives on the street for a little while. Murders a few more people for money before having enough to secure an apartment, then works at a factory.
Should end with him joining the Union against the Confederacy, in 1863. He is 35 years and joins in an attempt for ‘redemption’, even if he won’t admit that’s his reason. Gets shot and killed a few months later at the battle of Chickamauga. Man that kills him is the son of the police officer that almost killed him in the beginning.
