Dungeons and Dragons runs on 6 abilities: Strength (Str), Dexterity (Dex), Constitution (Con), Intelligence (Int), Wisdom (Wis), Cha (Cha). Typical humans have abilities somewhere around 10 or 11 in all 6 abilities.

Strength
Affects how much you can lift and carry, how much extra damage you deal with melee or thrown weapons, how accurate you are with melee weapons, and how muscular you are.

Dexterity
Affects how hard you are to hit, how accurate you are with ranged attacks, and how nimble you are.

Constitution
Affects how much health you have, how good your endurance is, how resistance to poisons and diseases you are, and how tough you are.

Intelligence
Affects your characters book smarts, your skill points and your searching ability. Each point of intelligence converts to ten points on the IQ scale, plus or minus 5 points.

Wisdom
Affects yoru characters awareness and common sense.

Charisma
Affects your characters force of personality, negotiation skills, and leadership ability.

Determining Ability Scores
Starting abilities range from 8 to 18, modified appropriately for your character's race. In order to ensure fair play among all of the players, we will be using the "Point-Buy" system to determine base ability scores.

Your ability score also gives you an "Ability Modfier." Higher modifiers are always better. ability modifiers follow the following system:

(Ability - 10)/2 (rounded down) = Modifier

For example: 18 results with +4, while 17 results with +3. -8 results with -1, and -7 results with -2.

(Please remember, you MAY want to pick your class and race BEFORE picking you ability scores.)

Point-Buy System
The point-buy system allots each character with a set ammount of points (40 in this case) to spend on ability scores. As the ability icnrease, it gets more expensive per point, as per the following table:

Abl:Cost
08 - 0
09 - 1
10 - 2
11 - 3
12 - 4
13 - 5
14 - 6
15 - 8
16 - 10
17 - 13
18 - 16

Remember to double-check your ability scores by PMing them to ME before you finish your character. It may be a good idea to also include your character's other information as well.

Also keep in mind that some feats require a high enough ability score to use.
