Is this the cure?

A lot of controversy surrounding this guy here. Did he write his own plays? Was he gay? What was he really trying to say in those plays of his? And did he, in fact, kill Christopher Marlowe? Discuss a specific play. Or discuss the man. I will let my opinions be known in time. But first, I'd like to hear yours. So I know who to argue with and who to side with. wink

I don't think he was very creative, but he was a good writer - Almost nothing he wrote was actually his own idea, but he just rewrote what was already written in a more brilliant and poetic way; interpret that as "writing his own plays" if you wish. What did he mean? Considering he is such a famed writer, it is quite probable that there were hidden messages, and things of the sort - but in plays it is always much harder to tell. Was he gay? Oh, who the hell cares - people get sick of hearing the same thing about famous people in history class, so they start trying to slash up historical people. Could he have been? Sure, you don't know what these people did behind closed doors. But whether he was or not doesn't really matter when all we're doing is reading his plays.

I have the same opinion Alex has, where I don't really care about Shakespeare's personal life and, while he didn't come up with the original idea, he wrote it down in a poetic way that's enjoyable to read (at least in my opinion). Many of his plays were based on historical events, so in that way, obviously he wouldn't have made all of it up. I've also never heard of him killing anyone... and I've studied his life before.

Ah but there are illusions to him killing Christopher Marlowe in his plays. And Marlowe is one of the people he supposedly stole his ideas from. Marlowe was stabbed in the eye in a bar fight. Many of his plays seem to be him confessing that it was he, Shakespeare, who stabbed him. If you really want to look into it like that.

What is it that makes people think Shakespeare is gay? My English teacher said that people normally based that idea off the fact that many of his love poems were written to men, but she said that it was likely he was commissioned to write them, so that didn't really mean anything.

As to everything else, I don't know enough facts to form an opinion. As far as I'm concerned, whether Shakespeare's plays were entirely of his own creation or whether his pen was simply a channel for others' ideas is a moot point (although I'd like to believe they were his own x3) since it doesn't exactly change the content of the plays. And I still like them, regardless.

Has anyone here seen Shakespeare in Love, by the way? That's an awesome film.
