My horse has problems picking up the left lead. It's not that she cant it's just that she doesn't want to. The only time she'll pick it up is in a corner with a strong outside bend, even then most of the time she wont pick it up. Some people have suggested using draw rains, but i have never used them before so i don't have any idea how they would help.

Draw reins should only ever be used by an expert hand.
My trainer went pro in Germany, and was only ever ALLOWED to use them less than a handful of times.
Everyone in North America puts HUGE emphasis on gadgets.

Most likely, you are not sitting deep and driving your mare from behind.
You need to be ;
A) using your seat and legs
B) rounding your horse
C) using your outsider rein, and giving with your inside

an inside bend helps, but it is not the only thing you need ot think about.
If you are leaning or tipping, your horse will be reluctant to (or simply WONT) pick up the correct lead.

It could be a matter of her not balancing properly, in which case you need to be engaging her hind end (riding from behind) and riding lots of circles, serpentines, and deep corners, until you can really feel her push with her inside hind.

maybe you are not sitting up straight in the saddle with your weight even that was my problem before now its better.

It's not that she cant pick it up or anything like that it's just that she will NOT. If i try to bend her to the inside she just laughs in my face and picks up the right lead anyway. Most of the time she does that with the outside as well. I'v been taking her over a poll on a circle and that seems to help her but we are still having issues with the flat.

As I said before, you are probably leaning and not making her engage her hind end.

HOW are you asking for the lead change?

I've never met a horse that wouldn't change leads naturally when asked properly, even stubborn ones.

sounds like she's stiff. the horse i learned to ride on, Peaches, was like that. i recently started putting training on her for her owner (how ironic, lol, the student has become the teacher, lol). and she has a really tough time picking up the left lead. she wont take it properly (bent to the inside) and round and such. she isnt in good enough shape to do that right now. she can do it to the right, but not to the left. so what i do with her is a LOT of leg yeild, shoulder in, counter flexing, circles, ...just bending. its help a lot. most horses (actually, all have a side they perfer, it just depends on how athletic, agile, flexible and fit they are) are to some degree one sided. whether it show or not is another thing. if u go in a straight line like on a road or something and ask a horse to canter wrong, like dont as for a lead, just kick, haha, they will almost ALWAYS take the same lead, unless u change ur balance. its most evident in young horses when the first start cantering with a rider because it harder for them to balance to one side. the best thing to do is to do lots of bending excersises and canter more on the difficult lead than the good one. this will help her muscling even out. but first get someone to watch u and let u know if ur leaning or not. if u can, its really nice to have someone with a more trained seat than u (coach, etc.) try cantering her and let u know if she feels stiff. good luck.

Thanks guys. I have been working on her bending and such a lot lately. The issue is that the trainer that used to be at the farm left so i'v been trainer-less for about 3 months now. I'm having my first lesson with the new trainer today so I'm hoping that we will get this thing fixed. I'm pretty sure that I'm balanced well i'v never had a problem with balance before. well i used to then my trainer put me on a horse that would turn if you shifted your weight to much and well needles to say i stopped randomly leaning and moving around. rofl She will pick it up over a poll on a circle though. I dont know if that gives any of you more info or not. I hope we can get a game plan figured out today though with the new trainer!

Try lunging her on the hard lead, before you get on her and ask her to do it with you on her. It might help her to get 'warmed up' on that side as well.

I know Shay had trouble picking up one lead at the begining of his training (I've forgotten it by now. XD), and since I could only have him canter on the lunge (he's not quite safe to canter while riding him xD), he's gotten much better on that side.
You'll find that they bend better going in the direction they are better on- this is because they're flexing the muscles on their good side to bend correctly. Shay prefers going to the right, but he bends much nicer on the left, so what I do is lots of small circles (not too small though) on both sides. So if your horse gets better on bending the correct way she needs to be while cantering on the left way, that also may help, since she won't get so unbalanced which could be the problem. YOU might not be unbalanced, but she might be and you might not be noticing it. There's a lesson horse at my barn who is like that, we need to physically keep him balanced in order to keep him in the canter...This means lots of inside leg. xD

I had my lesson with my trainer and it's all fixed. It turns out that she just wasn't listening to me redface . She told me to carry a crop and the second i picked it up she put her head into a frame. hahahahaha rofl . I feel so stupid sweatdrop . So yeah now she has finally figured out that she has to listen and hey she can do flying changes. who would of guessed. whee .
