Okay, so yes I know all the member's are at least semi-literate, but I wanted to address another problem that caught my eye recently. Although I have been aware of this problem for quite sometime and have developed my own philosophy about this subject, I wanted to know everyone elses thoughts, ideas and helpful tips about the subject.
That subject is "How do you deal with illiterate newbs who just can't RP?"
Note the difference between: n00b - Someone who cannot grasp the simple rules of the english languages and willing choses to not change and improve their skills acting like an immature idiot.
newb - Someone who is just as illiterate as the definition mentioned above, however, does want to learn how to improve and become better, with the most notable characteristic of the attempt to try and improve their writing ability and skill.
I'd just to share with everyone a situation I was in a couple days ago that got me thinking about this subject. So I joined this newb-ish High School RP because I was extremely bored and desperate of a human only type of RP. (I got tired of the ninja's, demons, and multi races with powers RP's a long time ago) Apparently this one girl who is the sister of the owner of the thread banned someone because she "can't RP properly." To me I thought that was completely uncalled for, and just ******** up and wrong, yeah I recognize some people are illiterate newbs, hell I was one too, but damn I learned! Especially when this statement was coming for a one-liner not even semi-literate (according to my standards) person who could hardly grasp the english language was completely beyond me. When I posted saying that what she did was uncalled for and wrong, and tried to reason with her my case that the way to deal with people who cannot RP properly is to not ban them, but teach them how to properly RP, she completely ignored me and banned me from the thread as well!
I was a bit pissed off from that and let my temper get the better of me and after a couple of posts which reminded me of the good ol days of flame wars back in gaia '04, I toasted her n00b a** to a extra crispy finish.
That's besides the point though.
Now my own philosophy and belief as far as newbs and RP'ing is concerned is to try to help those individuals who lack the basics of proper roleplay skills and technique. Go over there sentence structure and give them tips on how they can better describe a certain scene or action. This way the following results will occur:
1) A person will have learned to properly RP and hopefully continue to grow and improve their RP skill 2) There is one less illiterate newb out there on gaia thus decreasing the amount of newbs out on gaia 3) There is the possibility for that person to teach other's how to RP properly in given time, thus increasing the amount if literates out on gaia.
Now as a veteran member of gaia who's been a member since June 03, is it me or is gaia becoming overrun by idiot's who post *Dr0ps Nucl3r B0mB s0 datZ U aII dies!* I WIN!
Yes I know that is a bit exaggerated but still I hope everyone has some kind of understanding of what I'm trying to say. This is my own pet-peeve but one liner's are really annoying. I mean when I type a 3-5 page post and someone replies using a one liner really just kills my morale to continue RP'ing and makes me wonder. "WTH is the point?" Seeing that these types of RP'ers are over flooding Barton Town and the rest of the subforums with crap like this really gets on my nerves. So I was wondering like I had stated at the beginning of this post,
How do you deal with illiterate newbs and possibly n00bs as well?

Well..if they are my friend, or if I like them.. I try to teach them. Other than that I avoid noobs all together. And see.. people all think...well some people that I know.. think "noob" means that your new to gaia, like only been on for a few months or less..so they've told me "Aren't you a noob?" lol..but I'm not. I know how to type, I know not to bed, etc etc. I try not to role play with noobs ever. But if it can't be helped sometimes, ya gotta.

You mentioned that Barton Town is overrunning with illiterate roleplays, but there are plenty of literate roleplays to engage in if you browse the OOC forum.
I normally do not come into contact with so-called 'newbs' because I don't join roleplays invaded with them. Me and my friends used to go into illiterate roleplays and mock them. Ha-ha. xD
Anyways, I don't deal with illit. newbs. It's as simple as that. I had to learn to roleplay on my own, so why should I teach them?
If they want to learn to imrpove their skills, they should practice and read books more to expand their vocabulary.

Honestly, usually I simply stay away from those types of RPs. As you mentioned, nOObs aren't willing to improve their writing abilities so I sure as hell am not going to waste my time on their one-liner crap.
As for those out there who are just beginning to learn and improve on their skills, I encourage them, but hardly ever join in their Rps. ( This is pretty much due to the fact that I shy away from group RPs on the whole anyway ). If their willing to improve, I hope I can safely assume they want to RP with others who want to improve also. I learned how to get better on my own, and I think it's something they need to learn by themselves also. By practicing, I really think one grows a sense of style, rather than constantly feeling there are certain rules to abide by.

Since I own an RP guild, I do often get people who want to be members with... lacking... RP skills. Can't really avoid it. We work with them, give them pointers. If they don't improve, then I'll consider banning.

My response is the same as most of yours; I simply don't roleplay with them. I don't mind a discussion, but in my opinion, illiteracy takes a great deal of fun out of the roleplaying experience. I do, however, have more respect for newbs than noobs. At least newbs want to learn. I was new once, and although I was technically 'literate' when I started, it took me a while to get used to the post format here on Gaia, so I don't blame the new members for not having the best looking posts.
I've actually seen a guild on Gaia made for illiterates who don't care about their spelling/grammar/etc, with the only reason for it being that they don't want to be bothered to write out their sentences. I mean, the English language may not be easy to master, and is nearly impossible to master completely, but they could at least make an effort.

i pretty much agree with all of you... newbs are ok since they usually cant help it, but n00bs? no. just no. ive been called a n00b before because when making an ordinary post i dont use capitals and whatnot... but i feel that's just irrelevant because i DO know how to type and if RPing then yes, i do use proper grammer to the best of my ability (alex, comment on that and i kill you) and i think it's sad that there are people who dont know the least bit about writing and who still try to write o.O ~Rin

My boyfriend is a newbie when it comes to role playing. I mean, he knows the basic concept of role playing, but his sentences are usually one liners, and at an average of five to six words per post. Sometimes he doesn't capitalize his "I's" when he is speaking about himself, and it eats away at my brain when he does that. xD All in all though, he's gradually picking up on some grammatical errors he makes (we're not perfect, and I am far from it myself) but he is learning.
What bugs me about it, is I think he lacks the attention span to make a really good serious post. Oh, he's very creative, and when he wants to be, he'll shock you with it! If only he would take the time to sit down, and practice with his writing. ;_;
Oh, and I agree about the difference between a newb and noob. There are people however, who say there is no difference between them, which makes me want to go Chase them down with pitchforks and torches (figuratively speaking of course). XD

Unfortunately, I have a poor sense of aggression, so when dealing with noobs, so I simply don't. If by some chance I'm placed in an RP with one, I usually ignore their grammar/spelling mistakes and RP with them anyway. This is painful and gets on my nerves, but I find that it is the best way for me to deal with them. I have a fear that if I try and help them structure their sentences and perfect their errors, they're going to flame at me with their "aw3s0m3 7331 sk177s LOLOLOLz!!!1" Which is quite embarrassing and wears away at my patience.
Basically, I try and avoid them, so none of the above has to happen.

Well, if it's a thread you're running, I'd set it up in the profile skeleton. You should have the normal stuff, then add a section for 'Roleplaying Sample'. That'll give you a good idea of how the applicant roleplays.
I've had applicants in the past who send me ridiculous profiles. The most outlandish one I've seen was like this, and I kid you not: n4m3- Robert Jones 4g3- 138548745, but looks 19 h1s70ry- to be revealed... >.< p1c- can't find one LOLZ!!
...Needless to say, they ended up on my blacklist.

D; Oh gawd, the n00b wars. I miss them, but yet I don't. I think I've mellowed out a bit. How I deal with them? Well, I used to "throw them in the n00b machine" back in the day. but now I just plainly tell them that grammar is good and "please learn your grammar before attempting to talk to me ever again." ... needless to say, they don't take it well and reply with a "but i dun lyke grammerr wen i am out of skool so go away lolollolollololol." gonk Which brings me to my point. I tell them once, and if they don't comply, I ignore them. :3 ...unless I'm in a bad mood and in dire need of an argument. xd Wow. I don't think I made any sense. <:D

I have few problems with illiterate n00bs (n00bix cubes, as I call them) because I avoid them like the plague. Now semi-literates (sometimes even literates) who act like n00bs really give me hell.
This is the whole reason why I'm thinking of giving up on my Barton OOC request thread. Despite having "literate to advanced" right in the title, asking only those who can match my samples to contact me, and explictly stating the information I'd like to see in a PM, I still get PMs like "Wanna do bro x sis?" Nothing else. One measly sentence asking for something that I explictly stated that I don't do.
Honestly, I don't know how people who come to me like that actually expect me to accept their offer. It makes me feel so disrespected, and then I delete their message.

Uh... newbs, newbs... noobs... boob-ie footed birds...
Yea- how I deal with newbies? If they are fairly entertaining I'll humor them. If they are not? I'll just ignore them. :3
Just like how I deal with elitists who bore me. I'll ignore them. It's all realitive to me.

With newbs, I tend to avoid them, I can't stand the lack of puncuation, nor can I understand why they can't type like they write in real life. So yeah, I stray away from all thing newb.
