Do you think is it out of place to add cultural footnotes to a story. Someone sent me edits of ASD and corrected the fact that I called Kris the Prince of the school and could not understand when Jessica said to Natalie, "Or did you replace your boi with a girl?" when teasing her about being with Kimberly.

So do you think it would be a good idea to add in notes to explain things from lesbian culture that some would not know about?

Hmm. I would have thought that such terms would be fairly easy to glean the meaning of, but perhaps not. I would feel like an explanatory 'footnote' would be out of place - perhaps you could have one character explain the term to another, or explain it briefly in the prose somewhere.

That is a trick that a lot of writers use that I personally hate. Having someone who doesn't know a thing ask questions so the readers understand more. The problem is these statements that have been made are made between characters that already understand their meanings so adding in an explanation would be even more out of place then a foot note or two.

Oh, yes - I agree it's annoying when someone who already knows the answer asks!! I meant a character who was naive of the meaning - are there any?

They are never around during those conversations or are two shy to ask.

I just got this image of some nameless character popping up every now and then asking questions.

Nameless character - "What is that?"
Kris - "Who the hell is she?"
Natalie - "I don't know. She keeps appearing with strange questions."
Alyson - "Kill her!!!" Hits nosy character with frying pan.

That would pretty much be how things would end up LOL

footnotes are not a bad thing .... as an avid reader of Terry Pratchett footnotes are the norm lol

I agree. Footnotes can be a great thing. You don't even have to mark the spot, just make a note at the end of the piece with the page number it appeared on. Personally, I like those. Definitely helps to understand terms without making the story less realistic. Besides, manga does that all the time. xd

I agree, a footnote here and their throughout your stories isn't a bad Idea at all, especially remembering that a lot of your audience are people just beggining to explore their sexuality.

well, what happens with me a lot is i keep on reading and things fall into place most of the time. but i think that maybe a little footnote would be ok. but firescares made a good point

In novels, I've seen footnotes or sometimes a glossary or set of appendixes(sp?). Sometimes that works, but other times it's just as easy to weave the explanation in carefully. It doesn't even have to be obvious, if you handle it in certain ways.

In graphic novels, I've seen some of them write notes and explanations in the margins or between frames.
