Time Perios/setting - Medieval Fantasy

Nuts and Bolts

Fantasal is the name of a magnificent palace built on the junction of a permenant wound in the fabric of reality that seperates the land of dreams from the realm of the sleepers. Sleepers are classified as mortals and the like. The purpose of Fantasal is to act as a sort of protective barrier, to keep people from wandering willy-nilly into the hazardous dream realm, and to keep dreams, and most notibly nightmares from entering the sleeper realm.

Because of the bleedover of reality from the sleeper realm, Fantasal is semi-real in the dream realm. this means that it does not shift around on the landscape, and is not washed away by dream storms, but instead weathers through them (her inhabitants on the other hand, may not fare as well.) The closeness of the dream realm offers very little in the way of effects upon the sleeper realm, other than the ability to sustain the forms of dream creatures indefintiely within a certain range (loosely defined as the walls of Fantasal itself, though it is a bit wider in patches, and fluxtuates slightly)

Approached from either side, Fantasal resembles a huge white palace, with stone walls that form a great encirclement around the palace itself, its courtyard, and several other necessary structures. Within the center of the courtyard is the gateway that has been constructed to reveal the location of the rift between realms. Though the rift is invisible to the naked eye under most circumstances, it occaisionally will warp, and shift with the ethereal currents, and the gap between realms will give off unusual visual phenomena. Such as partial rainbows, glittering dust, or the like.

Characters (which could be of nearly any race) would be defined into three broad categories.

- Sleeper, or mortal. A being that is born of a sleeper mother and father. THough there are many races of Sleepr, they all share a few similar traits stemming from one simple fact; they are real. Sleepers unconsciously alter the dream realm, for their dreams are as real to the denziens there as the mortal realm is to sleepers. Each and every dream ever dreamt is its own mini-world within the dream realm, and the figures created there, truly exist. Most of these creations fade away immediately when the sleeper awakes, but the dreams that are particularly emotional, powerful, or on rare occaisions shared by multiple people, persits, and continue on despite their world fading away around them, leaving them to make their own existance in the dream realm.

- Dreams, or figments. A being that came into being through the whims of a dreaming sleeper. Whether benign, or nightmare, dreams that are powerful enugh to exist beyond their dreamer's awakening, quickly form their own distinct personalities and minds, and can be considered free-willed beings in their own right. Unconstrained by such things as the need for food, sleep, or aging, Dreams can exist indefinitely, though they often fade away as thei own will's dwindle. Dreams cannot exist for long in the sleeper realm, for their very 'body' is a mere creation of the imagination, and the harshness of reality wears it out at an incredible rate.

- Fae, or half-blood - Not true faerie folk, for such are consider to be Sleepers still, though such beings long found their own ways into the dream realm, and claimed its emptiness as their own, crafting their magics to create their own realms of pleasure and mystery within its endless dpeths. Fae are the offspring of both Sleeper and Dreams. Part of both worlds, yet truly belonging to neither, half-bloods rarely come into being anywhere except near Fantasal. Fae share the requirements of their Sleeper blood, aging, eating, and sleeping, though they have a natural ability to know when they are sleeping, and can direct their own dreams as they please, Fae are also in no danger from the harshness of reality, but, unlike their mortal kinfolk, can wander the realm of dreams without fear of being swept into a creation of someone's sleeping mind and being destroyed in the process.

Sounds interesting. I had an idea similar to it, partly inspired by The Dream Merchant. Something happens in the dream realm that traps the consciousnesses of people in it and sets nightmares free on Earth.

So, Fantasal would be the place that acts like a barrier to keep dreams where they belong and mortal sleepers in their own home.

It's a book, by Isabel Hoving. Pretty good read.

It definitely sounds like a very interesting idea. Sorry that I didn't reply on Friday, I was pretty busy.

Any sort of plot you've though of yet, for the Realm?

Plot? Plot? Someone wants a plot? oh no!

- Sidhe (otherwise known as Faerie Folk) wish to hold a grand ball at Fantasal (Lets face it, where else can they invite everyone, without causing fear of kidnapping?). Fantastic music, elegant gowns, masks the works. Everything's going well, until a trio of powerful nightmares deside to crash the party. Accomplished shapeshifters, they slip in unnoticed, and begin to terrorise the guests one by one.

I can always come up with others... trust me.

I don't doubt it. smile

So, I take it the nightmares are trying to take over the waking realm? Or do they just have fun tormenting people?

A Dream's personality is loosely based on whatever dream they came out of. A nightmare is usually a being that delights in terror and carnage, and actually draws strength and sustenance from spreading pain and misery amongst sleepers. usually. Exceptions always exist.
