I just got back form a band trip to Chicago. For me, that's a fifteen or sixteen hour bus ride (though it's only ten if you take backroads and go 80 the whole way without stopping) away. So... long. Anyway, my band went to play at the Symphony Hall in the Circle of Honor thing. We played, saw the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and had lots of fun.
Now, up until this trip, I never realized exactly how different it is up North. No offense to anyone- but they were rather rush-y, confusing, and rather rude sometimes. It may just be my Oklahoma raising, which is filled with empty fields and smiling people and space. It was a real culture shock- the buildings were close together and tall, rather than far apart and close to the ground. It was crowded, and I did meet quite a few nice people as well.
For example, quite a few elderly couples stopped me to ask where I was from. When I answered, they kindly smiled and told me they hoped I enjoyed Chicago. There was a young woman at the Symphony who tried to make sure I was alright when I fell on my face.
We saw the Blue Man Group, which was amazing. I kept a lot of the paper. We also went to Navy Pier, and did some other stuff that I'm far too tired and dizzy to remember right now. Talk about band trips, and such.

Man. I went on a band trip this year to Halifax. We were there for the Atlantic Band Festival. We were there for both our concert band and our jazz band. It was awesome. We got gold in both bands. Even though I screwed up horribly on my trumpet solo in jazz band. But we still did really good. And we all had a really good time. It was a lot of fun.
I can't wait for next year though. We get to go to Montreal next year We were supposed to go to Boston. But our BD got pregnant and she doesn't feel comfortable leaving us with a teacher who only knew us all for a few months and taking us to another country. So we're going to Montreal instead. Woot ^_^

Ou band went to New York City last spring, and it was very different than the south. We're from Tennessee, and it was as you said a "culture shock". I'm one of the few people from down here without an accent, and compared to the New Yorkers, you could tell I wasn't exactly from there.
Actually, funny story. We were at a Starbucks in Rockefeller Plaza, when some guy asked me if I was from Texas. I've never been to Texas in my entire life. It was soooo funny.
