Alright, guys, since a lot of folks ask about the poofing effect, I've decided to let you guys see the smoke "art" here.

Now, of course, these clouds would be on a layer above what's about to appear behind it (ex. a ninja, or a log, or a box of pocky), but whatever the case, the frame speed of the explosion clouds should be short and consistent.

Note: if you want a cartoonier type clouds, you can outline your explosion clouds black or dark gray (i.e. cell shading)

Next, copy that cloud as a new layer, then use the smear (looks like a pointing finger) and start rubbing the copy of the cloud from down to up on the left side of the cloud. Then do the same for the right, and finally a little from the top of the cloud.

Copy the smeared cloud and smear it some more to make it thinner and make it rise.

Copy the thinner/rising cloud and do it again until there's only a strand of gray left.

4 frames should be enough for the poofing cloud.
