I don't know about western riding but in english riding your toes have to be pointed towards the front. I find this quite difficult, I've been told everything about my position is perfect except for my toes. I know that you're meant to apply pressure with the inside of your calf but because I have my toes pointed out I'm using my heels. I do try to turn my toes towards the front but then I find it difficult to keep my seat and push the horse on. Can anyone give me tips to keep my feet right?

OH geez, I had this issue. I had to completely reprogram myself as well. Perfect till the toes...GRRR!

But it is all good because there are pretty simple ways to go about it. The best way I found was riding with nothing on Shadow during a lunge line lesson from a friend (we bartered woh lungede who when as we both needed to work o our positions) during so the first 5 minutes was nothing but relaxing and losing all the places we have learnt to sit and hold. The next was to build up during a walk. First the toes forward and then relaxed at the knee, heels back, back straight, and so forth...then we slumped and moved to a trot and did the same thing. Through we did this about 4 times a week each, for her since she was correcting rocking chair legs it took about 3 weeks for me to get my toes forward about 2.5 weeks. Since we were reinless we really established the feel in our sets as well, so doing this really helped boost our skill significantly. Doing the windmills, juggling, and moving insync also are things to do while ontop for about 20 minutes. Hope this helps you any.

Grow more leg muscle XD it's all about muscle, and then put the weight into your heels, and they won't have the flexibility to swing out much.

Ok another problem when I try to point my toes forwards. When I squeeze with my toes forward I find my leg shortens a bit and the stirrup slips behind the ball of my foot, so when I push my heels down my toes just point out again! I think I could have a case of practice makes perfect.

It's just a matter of reteaching yourself how to hold your toes. Just keep yourself aware of the direction your toes are pointing. You'll start doing it naturally eventually.

It is a lot of practice, but you'll get it.

Well try to go to your local saddlery and you might be able to find special sturrip pegs to keep you feet in the right place. It helps me although I can't move my legs but the other riders in the group use these and have no trouble with thier feet. If you can't find any and you need them I can ask my Instructor where they found them. After you get your toes in the right place use normal sturrips. Although you may need too use them for a while though. And you'll be suprised but your result!

You do realize that the leg and feet positions are a FRACTION of a difference? I ride and show Englsh, Enlisg SS and Western, Theres not that much of a difference.
