Ok, I feel an urge.
An urge to write something concise and useful, so that people who don't want to know EVERYTHING about fishing can still maximise their gain from it, and where people who do want to know everything can start, and ask annoying questions.

Contents:

1. Introduction
2. Fish
3. Bait
4. Rods
5. Other stuff

1. Introduction

Ok, from the very beginning.
You need two things to fish, bait and a rod.
You often get bait from daily chance, but it can also be bought from the fishing shop.
You should be given a basic rod to start with, so you can get fishing right away.

F bait will be fine to begin with, make sure you read the section on bait before you try using any other types.
If you have just started gaia, then stick with the basic rod. If you have more gold to throw around, I suggest you take a look at the rods section sooner rather than later, as the more expensive rods are easier to fish with.

Lakes. There are three.
Bass'ken Lake is the easiest, with slow fish and slow moving trash, this is the one to start with. Sometimes you will catch members of this guild trophy fishing in the 21+ rooms there, but usually there are not many. It is a good place to start fishing though.
Port of Gambino is next up, the fish here are much faster, but the trash goes at roughly the same speed, so it's the preferred lake of many, notably those who like to fish and chat too much.
Durem Reclamation Facility is the hardest of the lakes. I suggest you don't go here until you have mastered gambino. The fish here are faster still, and the trash are the same speed as the fish.

Ok, for now, I'll move on.

2. Fish
(including exhange items)

There are 5 basic groups of things to catch in the lakes, and at each lake, there are different ones. Every fish comes in three colours and they may move differently to each other.

The basic groups:
Trash- old cans, tires and old boots
Small fish- Guppies, Seedkin and Pebbo feeders
Medium fish- Bass, Trout and Biters
Large fish- Stripers, Tuna and Boldurs
Rare fish- Bass'ken rares, 'inos and Lionfish

Trash
All three items of trash can be caught at all of the fishing lakes. Additionally, boots and cans can be found in towns.
Trash is not all that worthless, as you can exchange:
500 x Old Tire for 1 x Tire on my Head
1000 x Old Boot for 1(pair) x Patchwork Boots
5000 x Old Can for 1 x Tin Hat
Cans are the most valuable of them all, but you can't search for three letter words in the market to find out how valuable rolleyes

Small fish
These differ from lake to lake.
Guppies are found at Bass'ken, they come in yellow, red and orange.
You can exchange them for a cap, if you have 100 of any one colour.
Also, you can get a helm, if you have any of the following combinations:
35 x red + 15 x yellow = orange guppy helm
35 x yellow + 15 x orange = yellow guppy helm
35 x orange + 15 x red = red guppy helm
You can also use these to make a food chain helmet (along with bass and stripers). I never have though, please refer to my suggestion for the 4x helms under Pebbo Feeders.
Seedkin are found at Gambino, they come in green, pink and blue.
You can exchange 100 of any one colour for a cap, or 50 of any one colour for head fins, this is recommended if you are fishing for gold at Gambino, I find it makes the most per fish and they sell quickly.
Pebbo Feeders are at durem reclamation facility and come in white, brown and black.
You can exchange 100 of any one colour for a cap if you like, or you can exchange 25 of mixed/any colour for gills (which sell rather well, and for a lot) These are also used (with biters and boldurs) in making the '4x helms' which are confusing, and I have never had any success with selling them. Look them up elsewhere if you care or if you know all about them post and i'll add it in.

Medium Fish
Bass live in Bass'ken lake. Guess why.
They come in blue, green and brown, and you can change them into helms for 100 of each colour. You can also get catfish whiskers for 25 bass, any kind.
Rainbow Trout Come in frozen, cool and warm varieties. They live in gambino and can be exchanged for a helm, if you have 100 of any one colour. You can't get anything else with them, which sucks, if anyone who can do anything about that every reads this, please do.
Biters Live in durem. There are pyrite, bluestone or blackroque varieties, and again, 100 of any one can make a helm.
More excitingly though, 25 mixed biters can make sharp fish teeth, which sell very nicely indeed (1k at time of going to press)

Large Fish
Stripers are the bassken large fish, they come in blue, green and grey and you can make a helm with 100 of a colour. You can also make fish eyes with 25 of one colour
Tuna are the Gambino biggies, and are either Icy, Spicy or Dicy.
You can use 100 of any one kind for its helm, or 25 mixed for a dorsal fin.
Boldurs are the large fish at Durem. They come in sand, stone and slate. They are pretty hard to pull in, but if you get 100 of one colour, you get a hat. It's often worth less than 100 of the fish though, oddly.

Rare Fish
These really are VERY rare. I've never had one. sad
They are each only available at a specific time of day, so the dawn/dusk (d/d) ones are even harder to get hold of than the others.
There are:
Bass'ken: Mutha Guppa (day), Big mouth Bass'terd (night) and Candy Striper (d/d)
Gambino:Buckin' Bino (day), Tootin' Tino (night) and Chargin' Chino (d/d)
Durem: Diamondback Lion (day), Emeraldback Lion (night) and Rubyback (d/d)
Ten of any one type of those would make a helm, good luck with that...

3. Bait

Bait affects the number of each fish that are in the water. If you don't have a rod you can fish with, you still won't catch any big ones.

Bait Degradation:

The number of times you have fished in the past 12 hours also affects your bait.
If you don't fish at all for 12 hours, it resets and for five buckets it will behave like better bait, like this:

If I use F F F F F ---> It will behave exactly like A A D D D
If I use F F D D D ---> It will behave exactly like A A A A A

So it's a big gold-saver to let your bait reset if you can, and then don't use any A bait for the first 5 buckets. After that, it behaves normally.

What's in the water:

With F bait, you can get up to 6 Medium, 1 Large and 0 Rare.
You can get plenty of small, and even more trash...and that's what you'll get if you don't filter (see 5)

With D bait you can get 11 Medium, 3 Large and 1 or 0 Rare, again plenty of small, but less trash.

With A bait you can get 18 Medium, 9 Large and 1 or 0 Rare, less small than with D and only 18 trash

Read about rods and filtering too, as these also affect what you catch. Obviously.

4. Rods

The rod you use affects the type of fish you can bring in, not only because it affects how easy they are to catch, but also because the larger fish can only be caught further out.
Minimum cast distances are as follows:
Large - 65ft
Medium - 45ft
Small - 25ft

Now onto the different rods you can buy:

Basic
5g

This is the bog standard that you start with, and once you master fishing it's sometimes fun to show off with it.
It casts 70ft and has parallel lines, really close together, it really is a sucky rod, buy a better one as soon as you can.

Basic Plus+
Basic rod + 10,000g

This is good fun, as a more advanced fisher, to give yourself a bit of a challenge with, but it's not really great for beginners. It casts 80ft and has parallel lines a little further apart.

User Image

Strength
1,850g

This is a great beginners rod, it's easy to haul in tough fishies, and it doesn't take too long to finish a bucket. It can't catch large fish though, as the cast distance is too small. Cast distance is 60ft, the lines are much wider at the bottom, making it a good rone to try if you tend to lose fish at the last minute.

Strength Plus+

Strength Rod + 11,075g

This is an excellent rod for fishing at durem, and for trying to get through buckets quickly. Its good if you haven't mastered gambino completely yet too, as it's very easy to bring in the fish and it casts just far enough to get you a large fish every now and then (75ft)

User Image

Performance
2,475g

This is a love-it or hate-it rod, in my experience. I hate it but I will try not to be too biased...
It is wide at both top and bottom, & casts 75ft, making it technically a very good rod, however the middle is actually narrower than the basic is.
It is worth giving it a go, but it just might not mesh with your style.

Performance Plus+

Performance Rod + 12,500g

If you like the performance, this is a better one. I know, shocking information...
It casts 90ft.

User Image

Distance
3,500g

This is a great rod for bass'ken and gambino, it's good for filtering with the wide top and it hooks plenty of large fish. It can be tough to use unupgraded in durem though. Casts 90ft.

Distance Plus+
Distance Rod + 13,050g

This is an ace rod, it's strong enough to use in durem and it has the max cast distance of 100ft. It's the preferred rod of most trophy fishers, as it has a good chance of getting the large fish in. Only real downside is that it can take a while to finish a bucket casting at full distance. Also, if you struggle with this at durem, try the strength plus for a while, you will probably find it a bit easier.

A note on upgrading

If you have the standard version of a rod, you can take it to the fishing hole and pay the upgrade price as above to have it converted to the plus version. You will still be able to use it as a plus or a standard, both will show in your inventory.
To save some gold, look on the marketplace as the plus rods there are complete, so you can sell your standard rod off separately and make a saving. You'll still have access to both in fishing, once you've sold your standard rod.

5. Other Stuff

This is where I will add to stuff when I think of it.

09/04/07 How to make a decent amount of gold from fishing
New people have been asking. Here is what I do, basically, so it's not faultless but it should give you a headstart.
Sell everything on the marketplace, aside from cans, possibly, which you may be better off selling in the exchange forum or to users in the fishing rooms.
Bass'ken- Don't fish here unless you have to. I think the bass and stripers sell individually for a fair price.
Gambino- Exchange seedkin for head fins, and sell them on the marketplace, they should fetch around 450-500 for pale or green, and 700 for dark.
Exchange trout for helms, and sell them. Or sell the trout themselves on the markey, either way should fetch a decent price of 15-20g per trout.
Tuna are more tricky, it varies. For a safe bet, sell the tuna. Sometimes the icy and dicy helms make more, but sometimes they don't. The spicy ones never do, don't bother with these unless you want to wear them (and even then i'd be inclined to sell your 100 tuna and buy a helm...have a look at the prices.
The dorsal fins are usually not a money maker. Check for yourself though.
Durem- Exchange pebbos for gills and sell for around 375g, these sell quickly too. Biters make sharp fish teeth also seling very quickly, and for around 900-1000g each.
Boldurs I would sell individually. The prices vary a lot so i'm not going to give an estimate, but the colours are worth different amounts so check the market before you agree to colour trade with someone.

11/04/07 Filtering

So you want your full 9 tuna in an A grade bucket, you're sick of trash, or you don't want a pile of seedkin and cans but don't want to fork out for the posh bait? You need to filter what you hook, so you only reel in what you want. Of course you'll not get more decent fish than it says in the bait bit, maximum.
Bass'ken- CAN SOMEONE DO THIS? I can't. I know, it's easy yada yada, but a striper moves like a can, I swear. Help.
Gambino- Easy peasy. If you don't know already, i depends on how fast they move and hard they pull. Trash hardly move at all, green seedkin turn around slowly, other seedkin and trout much faster. Tuna are pretty easy to spot too, they pull hard compared to the others. Not a great explanation i know, but you'll pick it up if you haven't already.
Durem- This one I like, i get to be mathsy about it. To filter here, count between the fish changing directions, discarding the first change. The fastest are pebbo and biters at under the count of three, with white pebbo being closest to three. Trash come in at 3-4, i find exactly three, personally. Boldurs are above 4, typically around 5.
You may have to adjust your speed of counting to fit these numbers, or adjust the numbers to fit your speed, but that's the method, you just have to calibrate! Yay for sciencey words.
