Who came up with that, really? I mean, if I were planning to take over the Wizarding World, I would not call my evil followers Death Eaters. Those Who Eat Death.
Really, who would want to eat death? Cause death, maybe, Death Bringers makes sense (but still sounds funny).
Hey, you hungry? I've got some death here that we can chow down on. Please.

You are really bored, aren't you? This is a very random thread. But I do have to admit that the name sounds kind of silly if you think about it.
As silly as it sounds, it had the right affect. I think the fact that it has death in it just makes it sound evil. And now that I think about the term Death Eater, I kind of think of the Dementors and them sucking the life out of people. Although that would be Life Eaters, which does not have the same evil, forboding ring to it.

Life Eaters reminds me of LifeSavers, the candy.
No, I was not merely bored. It just so happens that I find this an engageing subject, and one that ought to be debated at length. So, ha!
Right. Yeah, it does have a good effect, until you think about the words.

JKR called them Death Eaters solely for how evil it sounded. 'Tis my theory.

that's a good theory but mine is that she just wanted to give the light another way to make fun of them. But if we think that she would never do that then she could have meant it like they are more powerful then death. Think of the picture of the fish each getting eaten by a bigger one. So basically, Death Eaters are more powerful than death. Now please excuse me while I laugh hysterically at the fact that death eaters could be more powerful then death.

I've considered the fact that death eaters are those that avoid death, since the Dark Lord attempts to gain immortality, his followers are considered those that eat out death, thus living as long at their Leader, in a matter of speaking.
That is, if anyone understood that.

The way I see it, is that JKR wanted to make them menacing and the like. I think of 'Death Eaters' used for follower's of the Dark Lord because of the fact that they 'eat death' because they kill so much; they're basically 'eating' the lives of others. Hope you all followed that. I hate to say it, but this thread reminded me of an icon I have somewhere that reads: 'Breath Eaters: Mints for followers of Voldemort.' So sorry. Had to say that.

Hah, that's funny. Breath Eaters... Made me smile.
But yes, I follow what you mean. That makes sense. Plus, it really gives them a disgusting sound to them. Death eaters... eat death... those who eat the dead? Sounds kinda disgusting and evil to me.

Nor would I. I think it's kind of sad, though, that Stephen King is afraid of Death Eaters... I'd be with them torturing, or something to that extent. If not, I'd be killing them. *maniacal laughter*
