Any thoughts on this article? Personally, I don't think body mods are appropriate for young children...

Umm... what the Hell do you say to that?!? I think that ears and navels and a cartilege or two is OK before 18, but the picture of that kid was honestly scary. He has about as many visible mods on his face as I have on my entire body, and I'm 19! I know what the author is trying to say with the article, but we can't just jump into letting kids as young as 10 (or younger) make decisions like that because there are too many social consequences that kids can't know about at the age.

More than just social. I disagree with his claim that kids are responsible enough to care for piercings. I know I couldn't when I was little and I was a pretty smart kid. I had my lobes re-pierced several times because I kept getting them infected. I also think that it's ridiculous to say that a little kid can decide whether they want a tattoo and what it should be of. When I was little I wanted to change my name to Ariel!

Side note: I don't mean any offense to Larratt. BME is one of my favourite sites. I just disagree with this particular article/view point.

The guy is a very good debator, and brings up some interesting in points in light of a persons and societies development. However, that kid in the photo, looks about 6. It is true that a persons intelligence and life experiances can't actually be determined by age, but I think there is a limit to the age certain things should be done. Especially mods most effected by puberty, like the growth spurts and other certain developments. I don't think a tattoo would look too good after being stretched so much, a surface piercing would grow out even faster and your bodies shape and everything can change drastically when you hit adolescence.

So even though there are reasons against, if it was debated and sorted out reasonably, some sort of common logical ground could be reached.

TBH the piercings on the kid looks pasted in on photoshop, just.. looks wrong and if it is indeed real, then its even worse.
I mean, kids like him do play fights! They whack eachtoher with sticks, throw tantrums and now this kid is like a walking needle cousion. Just a matter of time before someting gets ripped out

There are age limits for a reason, and even if I tought they were stupid before, I get now why they are there. If you want a peircing/tattoo so badly you can wait untill 16-18 (depending on what you're getting done) and in the mean time really think about what you want to have for picture or where you want that piercing, if you really want it there etc.

Just looking at the picture makes me thing.. "Something is gonna rip while he grows..."

PS. To the nutcases who are calling the FBI because of the photo at the start of this article, of course it’s a fake photo. We don’t live in a perfect world, yet.

Well, that settles things down a bit in my mind. The first thing I saw was that the piercings in the kid all looked like the same image copied over several times..

Aside from the benefit of health (as far as I've read, that is), what makes this any different than circumcizing your newborn son (or daughter, in rare cases)? I mean, aside from the fact that letting your kid choose to get pierced and having the snipping done for them.. I'm sure that because of my and my girlfriend's liking towards piercings and body modification, our son/daughter(s) will have their ears pierced as soon as they show an interest in it. Still, extreme mods (in this case: anything more than basic ear piercings), I think not. That's something they'll have to wait till they're a wee bit older for. That's my view at least. Sorry I had to drag circumcision into this.

I disagree with the writer of the article.

Kids don't know what they want. They change their minds about everything. Piercings and tattoos especially. It's not a matter of keeping it clean (which probably won't go well either), but a matter of what they're going to want to have in 3, 5, 10 years. Piercings I guess wouldn't be too bad. They come out. But they'll have the scars.

Tattoos should definitely be kept the way the laws are now. Most states allow 16 year olds to get stuff done with a parent signature.

That was slightly disturbing...

Totally agree with what elwine said. And little kids are *so* easily influenced. Poor kid might gauge his ears, wake up one morning and be all "that was stupid" and possibly have to deal with scarring and fun stuffs like that.

A few months ago, I was looking around the accessory store Claire's with a friend, when a little girl and her dad walked in. She couldn't have been more than 8 or 9. She wanted a nose piercing, and her dad seemed perfectly ok with it. They were sent over to a nearby tattoo parlor, and basically I was horrified that a father would let his young daughter get her nosed pierced.

It's the gaguing that worries me. With most of the piercings, unless they get damaged, he can just take it out and it's back to normal. The gaguing might not shrink back down.

EW.
Ear piercing in children is fine, and teen piercing is fine with me, but I'm not about to let my 7 yr old daughter get her naval pierced. (Okay, I don't have a seven yr old daughter, but if I did....)
