The month of April is considered Autism Awareness month. With the curebie organizations on the rise I decided I want to do atleast a small part in educating people on a more unbiased view of autism. I've placed a link in my signature to a little fact-sheet with informational links that I wrote up last year in my journal.

It's really scaring me, Autism Speaks has TV ads and now they're in ToysR'Us, as well. I went in there last week and there were huge banners and signs hanging around the store enticing customers to "help solve the puzzle of autism" and "donate to Autism Speaks."

Raising awareness is good, but with the bleak portrait Autism Speaks paints, I don't feel they are really a good voice for autism at all.

I guess I don't have any questions to ask, but put your thoughts in, I suppose?

A charity campaigner hassled me earlier today. I'd just struggled through the supermarket checkout aisle, hampered by a bag full of huge Easter egg boxes from a previous shop. This bloke had carefully positioned himself on a stool next to the exit. I was reading his skimpy notice from a distance, carefully not making eye-contact and deciding whether they deserved money from an extremely poor aspergian.

The notice said something like, "Helping support autistic kids and their families". I'm thinking, "Hmmm, not really enough information. I would like to know how they support children. Does this involve therapy to change them?" Then the man, who I really didn't like the look of, hassled me. I said, "I am autistic" and stomped off.

I like the link, Civet. I hope many people actually begin to see autism as some perk of a person rather than a disease needed to be cured. Also, I hope that more people will become aware, as I have a feeling that autism is becoming a new kind of normal.

Ah, was it a charity specifically for Autism? I wonder if it was a large organization or a smaller local one or something?

I hate it when people hassle you for donations or solicitations. It really puts you in the opposite frame of mind than one in which you'd be willing to give.

Thanks, Angel_Paladin. I hope so too.

My friend will have a booth at Wal-Mart for Autism Awareness. She want me to help. I have a bunch of books and a poster. Any other sugeations? I'm an undx'd mom of an asperger son. Her kids are more classic autistic. The event is on the 19th. any sugestions? PM me or hotmail me at texastardis.

It would be nice if we could have some sort of central thread and flower campaign on Gaia.

We could make a thread for Autism Awareness Month, with information on a few different autism spectrum disorders, and maybe a plug this guild (there are many Aspies on Gaia who don't know about us yet). We could assign a type of flower to wear on our avatars. Along with the flowers in our avatar, we could have a signature banner which says "______ for Autism Awareness" ("_______" being the kind of flower).

I'd vote for Purple Daisies to be the flower.

There's an Autism awarness Month? I don't think it's working.

Oh, cool. Have you done it yet?

Suggestions? I'm not sure. I think you should have some hand-out brochures or flyers to give people so they can read them later if they are so inclined. Most people probably will throw out flyers, but some will hopefully read it.

I think that's a good idea, SunflowerGoddess. Do you want to start a thread? I could post my info in there, and others can also put info if they'd like, too.

Why the purple daisy, out of curiosity?

We should also try to see if there is any kind of list of flowers and what they are used for on Gaia to represent organizations to make sure we don't end up taking one already in use.

...Only because purple daisies are pretty.

Sunflowers are a good choice, too wink .

When I lived in Florida, during Autism awareness Month, a bunch of Autistic families(meaning like a couple hundred), mine included, were invited to an Autism awareness banquet at Sea World, hosted by Sea World and something else.
It was always awesome because they choose things for us to do, and they reserved a ride at a set time so we didn’t have to deal with the crowds. They also chose low key things so that there weren’t as many sensory issues.

Wish I still lived in Florida.

Also, my school district has been ‘trying’ to do things Autism related. There is a battle of the bands, which makes little sense but apparently it is, “Battling Autism” whatever that means. And Everybody Counts, which they did on Autism for every grade except my little brothers.
Which really helped him out.

Anyway, I love the idea of the thread and the flower thing!

they don't have anything like that in my town, most people would be lucky if they even heard the word Autism.

I just started a job at Barnes and Noble last week and I noticed there was an endcap (end of one of the aisles) dedicated to "Autism Awareness Month," featuring books about autism. Small, but it's something.

The flower idea is good.
