I am just curious to see everyone's views on the whole Harry Potter series. Do you think it's a sin to read Harry Potter or watch the movies?

If you are going to question Harry Potter then in turn you must question all fantasy and things that are not of God. It is by your own convictions that you must make choices on these things. Personally, I think that Harry potter would have been alright, but it just keeps getting darker, so I dont personally like it all that much.
Magic has always been looked upon as something evil. The reason is, is because the idea behind magic is power that does not come from God, and as Christians we know it can only come from one other thing, even if masquerading as some pagan God or spirit of the dead, it is the Devil.
I don't believe it says anywhere that reading things like that is a sin, but personally can you say it is something you would read with or to Jesus?
When something becomes more important than God or unwittingly takes up all of your time, then it becomes sinful and fool hearty. Also if you love the books enough that you would be sad when you could not read them... I think there is a mild problem there as well.
I would not, personally, expose my children to Harry potter or any hardcore fantasy until they were older and I have been able to SET in them the way to fight the good fight. After that, it is there walk with God and I am just there to urge them.

you see, my point of view is that reading is entertainment. Harry Potter is a book, and as long as you don't actually believe that that stuff is true, than it's ok. but i'm curious to hear other opinions.

I agree, as long as you don't actually believe and go against your Christian faith to be practicing Witch craft, it's OK. Sure I have my Slytherin scarf and made up my own character for the series, but I am not going to start being an actual witch here. The book is about the classic good versus evil, like Lord of the Rings, Sword in the Stone...It's not an evil book, it's a book to be enjoyed for fun. It's not a true story and I don't think it's saying for the reader's to start becoming a witch. It does make me mad when Christians make a huge bon fire and burn all the HP merchandise. It's just not right...It's a book..about a boy...who has to defeat a very evil being to save the world. I don't see any message in the book saying "Hate God and Christians".

harry pootter i dont think is that bad, though im not a christian so i dont know if my opinion counts sweatdrop but if its cause it deals with magic its hardly based off wiccan, if thats what your worried about, though i dont know alot about wiccan, i do know there is no broom flying and a true wiccan does not do curses or change the shape of things.

Harry Potter is nothing more than a really good book. Just as long as people keep reality from what's not true then they'll be fine. It is a person's choice to believe what they want. I don't think that's it's a sin to read the books. I personally like them. But i know what my faith tells me is true. So I keep my faith in God.

i do not read it myself but i believe that it is not a bad book/movie but you still must be careful. if a person where to take it to an extreme i believe then it would become wrong but that does not only apply to harry potter but all of life.

I think it's how the reader interprets it. Personally I just like it for the good reading. it's a great story line with awesome characters, and intriguing plot. There are some people who take it way to seriously though, and get swept up in the entire witchcraft/black magic thing. And witchcraft does exist, and we have to be careful with that kind of stuff.

I enjoy Harry Potter. It can start some curiousity in witchcraft, and it is very dark. For those reasons, I don't think it should be considered a children's book anymore. But as long as you can separate fantasy from reality, I think it's fine to read.

The Tanakh tells us to stay FAR away from magic. Harry Potter has absolutly nothing to do with Kaballah, or Wicca, or Daemon Summonings, or any other form of actual, real, working Dark Magic. If you can differentialt bteween the real world and a book, and recognise and judge the worldviews in the books, then you're golden. I, for one, love the books, and I own all of them.
