Players choose from four characters each time they start or restart a level: Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool (later renamed Princess Peach), and Toad. Each has a special ability: Luigi can jump very high, the Princess can remain temporarily suspended in the air (levitate), Toad can pick up things quickly and is very agile, and Mario is a balanced version of all these.

Did you know that SMB2 is a remake of the game Doki Doki Panic which was released only on the Famicom? The original SMB2 was considered too similar looking and too hard a game to be released in the US so they just changed the four main characters of Doki Doki Panic over to the Mario Bros along with Peach and Toad to complete the line-up. This version was later released in Japan under the title Super Mario Bros 2: USA.
