Greetings Everyone !

While i'm not expecting many people to bother reading this, I figured - Hey, what the heck, why not. This thread will cover the major events taking place with Alexandria over the year 2007.

A bit about Noire:

-Noire acquired a degree at the end of winter 2007 and will be seeking a double major (most likely) in Fall of 2007, with expectations for at least one Ph.D by 2013.

Noire says "I'm seeking two Ph.Ds, but the student loans are going to run about $262,400.00, not counting room & board. Of course, the second Ph.D will take at least until 2015, by which time I expect the world economy to have collapsed after some horrible global catastrophy."

In the mean time, he's working on writing an RP book based heavily on the principles of science and math, with a historical flare.

He plans on attending at least one of the major conventions in 2007, if not Fanime Con, then one of the next two. He is in a moderately long term relationship and spends a lot of time and money travelling. If you live someplace interesting, and would like to meet up, you can contact him via email at kamavasayita@yahoo.com. Please put "Gaia" in the subject box.

About the Library
The library is an ongoing project and probably needs to be updated here and there. One of the servers hosting a few documents crashed, - the same server we had planned on moving the entire archive. Thankfully, we didn't. Backups will follow in accordance with their relevance, and upon request.

To accompany the library project, we will begin to add direct links to videos comprising lectures and edcuational films, which will become the bulk of our experimental telecourse system.

Our first subjects will involve Physics and Mathematics but may branch into other areas. At Alexandria, we are commited to the education of our members, and we believe in action, not just talk.

For sake of reference, a telecourse in a university might consist of 26 episodes of 30 minutes each, totalling 13 hours of video, plus a textbook for additional guidance, and 4 lectures, occassionally accompanied by labs. The lectures are usually about 2 or 3 hours, thus about 10 extra hours. Combined with some labs, you might find as many as 32 hours of class equivelence time in a very good telecourse, and closer to 21 hours in one less intensive.

In our program, we plan on direct linking (through google, youtube, or whatever else we can find) programs often in excess of 30 episodes and commonly 50 minutes long. Along the way, we will attempt to provide recommended course materials, or references to our Library (as well as making new addtions) to provide as much support as possible.

It has been this Author's experience that the vast majority of educational programs lauded today have little more to offer and often less than what a keen mind and access to the internet can present.

We hope that you will find not merely an access to some ancient Tomes of Novelty, or some interesting occult references or literary works, but that you may feel compelled to say that a solid Liberal Arts education can be attained at Alexandria, and though it cost you nothing to come and see, what you left with was priceless.

That's very nifty noire, what're you studying? domokun

My only question is: After obtaining a ph.D like you plan to and digging yourself into a giant hole of debt (262k is no small sum of money)

What will you do? What job do you plan on obtaining that will pay off said bills?

Obviously knowledge is power, what will you do with yours? ;D

Also, when you're finished your RP book, I would love to read it. domokun

ive been thinking that the most efficient aspect of roleplaying is its ability to teach, through the desire of its participants to emulate their characters, with the objectives usually being related to either a clear sense of progress (like levels, wealth, or combat abilities), the demonstration of a sense of drama (for actors), or comedy (for the charismatic).

most people in civilized worlds familiar with movie stars know they train heavily in the subjects they portray, such as working 3 weeks with EMT for a Hospital Show, to learning fencing and kendo for the next highlander. Many military movies require the actors to go through a literal boot camp with several if not all of the same aspects as the military present.

Older roleplaying games got their start as a breakoff from War games, which were derived from military strategy props, many used today. The same applies to video games and flight simulators.

More recently, I've been thinking I would really like to do a project where we gather up a bunch of aspiring video game programmers, and a bunch of mathematicians and Administration, and cooperate on the construction of a Fantasy RPG series where the player character uses a form of magic derived from learning techniques, and the techniques are learned by understanding the lowest arithmetic to the higher end geometry. Many of the NPCs would be actual math and physics philosophers from ancient history to the Present, and have storylines similar to Chrono Trigger.

I hope such a project might contribute to a Thesis for math.

I'm making an enormous amount of progress in recovering the original video series for the College, and infact have found several times more material. Recently, I've added a stanford link, which may act as an A-Z guide on Computer Science. I've also got a ton of stuff from Berkeley and MIT I can't wait to share with you, and will be spending some time today digging for videos related to math from the top 25 universities in the Nation.

last quote of the year:
Truth and sincerity have a certain distinguishing native luster about them which cannot be perfectly counterfeited; they are like fire and flame, that cannot be painted- Benjamin Franklin

Columbia is not nearly as liberal as people make it out to be, at least not in the deviant behavior aspect. Most people tend to act like future politicians. Class conflict is not recognized outside of a textbook. Richard Dawkins is the Jesus of campus. The founder of pragmatism (a branch of skepticism) taught there. Expensive statues, readily available food, decent concerts, world speakers. Protests, stabbings, muggings, humidity. Racially charged, reconstruction, jackhammers, poor advising. Rats, cockroaches, bed bugs, bureaucracy. Expensive tutors, good grad student instructors, incompetent professors. Giant pizza slice. Totalitarian library, subway musicians, Harlem, money = land. Political science, ferry, ice cream d***o. Free stuff, Yalies, Exeter kids, Carnegie Hall. Facebook, nightlife, times square, kimchee in the fridge. No Malls, Saints day, barber shop. Moved.
