It's a teen/YA novel that's not quite finished yet. I'm quite far off from being done.
I'll post a bit, and I'm up for any criticism. It's done in diary format cuz I like it that way, lol.
Diary of a Gay (NOT!... well, maybe) Boy August 24, my room
*sigh* School starts in a few days. I can’t believe summer went by so fast. I probably should start reading my summer reading books. It might be a bit helpful if I did that.
Nah. I’ll probably just get CliffsNotes off the net. Thank God for those or I’d never have passed my English classes. Sure, I’m good at writing, but there’s only so much of the grade that’s a writing portion and it’s not a whole lot. It’s not enough to bring up my grade. But whatever.
Ack, Mom’s calling. Gotta go.
August 24, later, in my room
Just got back from dinner. I had to set the table and get the drinks ready. We had burgers and fries tonight. So now, I’m back and sitting here on my bed, listening to Gwen Stefani. You know, she totally needs to go back to No Doubt. I mean, I love her solo stuff but she was a lot better with No Doubt. I hope she goes back soon.
Plus, WHY release a song that has the s-word in it like fifty billion times? You’ll have to edit it out and what’s the fun in that? There were way better singles on the album. But whatever.
Not much else to write about. High school starts in a few days and I’ll probably be all alone on the first day and never make any friends. Why am I so shy? Why do I—
Someone’s knocking. I gotta go. Can’t I just sit in my room and wallow in my own nervousness about the upcoming school year? Gosh.
August 24, even later, still in my room
Nothing important happened. Just my older sister wondering if I’d seen her lipstick; oh yeah, like I’d be harboring it somewhere in my room. I told her that sorry, I hadn’t seen it and she just left without a word. I swear, I TRY and help her and she doesn’t even thank me!
Whatever.
Anyway, perhaps I should introduce myself. Even though no one besides me will actually read this, I guess it’ll help somehow. So, here are my basic stats:
Name- Philip Blake Age- 13 Height/Weight- 5’8/135 lbs. Birthday- March 23 Class- soon-to-be freshman (oh, how exciting!) Occupation- Student/Budding Writer Hobbies- writing (DUH), singing, theatre, roller skating
Hmm, that’s really all I can think of to write about myself. God, it’s so short! I am really pathetic. I might as well just go to sleep now since nothing else exciting is happening in my life (and probably never will).
August 24 10:30pm, in bed
I can’t sleep. I don’t know why. Well, actually I do. It’s because my damn brain won’t shut up. I hate it when this happens. My body wants to go to sleep, but my brain just stays awake and thinks about anything but sleep. Ergh. Will attempt to sleep again now.
11pm, still in bed and unfortunately awake
Still can’t sleep. Maybe if I made more of an effort and didn’t keep getting up to write in this, I might be able to get into some sort of state of sleep. Maybe I’ll try that.
1am
It didn’t work.
August 25, 10am, my room
Well, eventually I fell asleep. Probably because my brain ran out of things to think about and finally decided that, yes, 3am is the perfect time to decide to give it a rest and let your owner GO TO SLEEP.
School starts the day after tomorrow. My school does things weirdly for the first week. The freshmen go in on Monday, the sophomores go in on Tuesday, and so on. And on Friday, every class comes in and we go through our schedule again and it’s a full day. On each of our individual class days, we go through our schedule and meet for about half an hour in each class. Should be way exciting.
Not.
Anyway, here’s my schedule: Religion (yea, I go to a Catholic school) I have that every day, but everything moves on a rotating schedule. After Religion, I have homeroom for a bit, then it’s off to World History. After that, I have study hall, then English, Science, Latin, and Algebra. On the next day, second period will be Phys. Ed. (I hate gym class. I’m glad that I only have to take two years of it then I’m done with it FOREVER.)
Hopefully, this new year will be exciting and full of new prospects, friends, and adventures!
Yeah, right.
August 26, 3pm, my room
High school starts tomorrow. How exciting (not really)! Still just been sitting around. I decided to start reading my summer reading stuff and then gave up after fifteen minutes. They’re just so boring.
I went with my mom to get school supplies. I got a new backpack and such and all that fun exciting stuff. All my books have arrived and everything is ready for tomorrow. It’s only a half day, so that’s good. I love going to school for only a half day. It’s exciting.
August 27, 7:50am, the car on the way to school
So, I’m sitting here in the passenger seat next to my dad and we’re on our way to my high school and the first day. I’m so nervous. I really feel like I’m gonna throw up or something. I mean, I know I have some friends already (half of my eighth grade class went to this school), but what if I don’t have any classes with them? Well, technically my actual friends don’t go to this school; ok, well one does. His name’s Orlando and he’s pretty smart and yet he’s my friend (and I’m not smart AT ALL). It’s really weird. I mean, why would a smart guy want to hang out with a not-so-smart guy like me? Well, maybe possibly to make him look better, but I know that that’s not the reason he’s friends with me. At least, I hope not. Anyway, most of the other people I know from elementary school are kind of acquaintances, not actual friends.
Oh, hey, we’re here.
August 27, 8:05am, religion class
Ok, so my friend Orlando? Yea, he’s not here. The teacher called roll and he was SUPPOSED to be in this class with me, but he isn’t here today. So I guess I’m all alone. Good thing it’s only a half day. I won’t be alone for too long.
Well, this teacher is ok. Her name is Mrs. Hernandez and she’s tall and thin, has shoulder length wavy black hair and she’s Hispanic. She’s asking some questions to the class and no one’s answering. Several minutes are passing and no one is raising their ha—
Oh my God, guess what she made us do?
Jumping jacks.
No joke. She made us do jumping jacks to wake us up. That is so weird! I mean, what is this, the army or something? Afterwards, we all sat down and, not so surprisingly, people raised their hands when she asked a question.
Anyway, there’s this dude who’s sitting next to me who has this kind of curly black hair that falls just the right way over his dark brown eyes. He’s got this square ja—
WHY AM I WRITING THAT?!!? That is so weird. Why would I write that kind of thing about a GUY?
Maybe I should start writing in pencil so I can erase things if I don’t want them here in this diary. I’m glad no one’s gonna read this. If they saw what I wrote above, they’d think I was gay or something, which I am not.
Oh, there’s the bell. I gotta go.

I like it so far, I want to read more as he deals with his sexuality more, but it seems a little too articulate and mature for a 13 year old boy's diary . . . but then how the hell would I know?

Hm... I think it'll be interesting to watch this progress... It's hard to say much with this little bit, because it's just an intro and there's not too much happening yet.
Good start, though. =)

I love the idea of how to do this. Just keep in mind that even though it's written as a diary, you want it to read a little more like a story, so I think the innterupptions are a bit to distracting in the first day. I really like the sarcasm. It gives the character personality and shapes him into a more realistic person. On the contrary, though, constantly mentioning that no one will read it so he can say everything makes it sound like you're trying to hard to make him into a real person and it has the opposite effect.
But, out of my criticism zone: I love the idea. You got me just far enough in to want more. Oh, so he's gay? Does he confront this? What's his intitial reaction? Does anyone find out? So many questions! I can't wait to read more of it.
BTW, do you base much of this on a your own expierence?

Soooo, I completely forgot I had posted this here, and don't know why I didn't just post a link to where the story was, lol. Here's a link to the actual story. I have some other stories on there, but this is the only gay one: http://www.freewebs.com/boothyinwonderland/diaryofagayboy.htmI have about 62 pages in Word of this right now, and hoping to write more soon. My plan for this is a trilogy, going every two years. So we start out with him as a freshman in HS, then a junior in HS (where he writes a one-act play and gets it performed at his school's one-act festival), and then freshman at college. Possibly a fourth book as a junior in college, but I may just incorporate stuff from the junior year into the freshman year. And it is based on my own life, sorta. lol. The basic plots for the second and third books are based on my life, but most of what has been happening in this first book so far is made up. Only similarities between the book and my life are the characters, and stage crew thing (which is coming up). I've been trying to decide if I want him to keep his sexuality a secret like I did until his first year at college or if I want him to come out as a freshman. It might be too young for him to come out in this book, but I'm not entirely sure. And thanks for the compliments and suggestions everyone!! You can keep doing those here as you read the story on the other site.
