Has anyone ever tried (or really thought about) Elizabethan original practice?
Actors would get only their lines and the 3 word sides of the character before them, and never rehearse with their scene partner beforehand.

It's an absolutely incredible experience, my Acting Shakespeare class is currently performing the scenes that we did original practice style, and they're incredible for none of the actors ever having read the scene before.

Any other thoughts/ opinions?

That sounds like it would have been hard. How did they do things like blocking and sword fights?

Before the shows, they would take a couple of hours (but not long!) to work out entrances and exits, and block fight scenes. All other blocking would just kind of happen.

It IS hard.

We used some aspects of original practice when we did A Midsummer Night's Dream. We did it outside in a courtyard, which is original practice and meant we get to use the roof of our theater lobby for Titania's scenes, which was very cool. We also did a 'rousing jig' at the end, which Shakespeare did with his earlier plays.

Wow, I've never heard of practicing that way, but it sounds like it could be a neat experience.
Blocking always takes forever to figure out, no matter how you try confused
