Have you heard?

I mean, I figure if you read webcomics, especially SomethingPositive, Stuff Sucks, or even those that hang around the Something Awful forums, you would have at least caught a brief reference to this recent affair.

If not, let me summarize:

Todd (Goliath) Goldman, well known for shirts such as "Boys are stupid, throw rocks at them" and other designs that can be found at David & Goliath Tees, has been ripping off webcomic artists for sometime now.
It didn't really create an uproar until a recent exhibition where a painting was seen that looked strangely similar to a comic from Purple p***y created in 2001.
And Todd's version?

It doesn't stop there, though, because he's also been ripping off Stuff Sucks with a line called This Sucks.

While the fish isn't exactly similar, it resembles the fish, Binky, from Liz's comic and clearly "This Sucks" is a different version of "Stuff Sucks", I guess he was just thinking "Maybe if I'm a little bit more specific on what sucks...no one will notice..."

And briefly, the first example that was noted a bit ago was his Eve L character which is basicaly a child drawn version of Lenore without an iris in the eye.

Has anyone else heard about this?????

YES. I meant to post something about this.

PAY ATTENTION, PEOPLE!

This is a HUGE deal. I strongly encourage you to follow all links and read all you can about this so as to grasp how despicable this is!

This link conglomerates all the plagiarism by Todd Goldman that has been discovered, and displays how much money he is making off of this.

Hey, you ridiculous webcomic fans. D:< I want to hear you expressing your displeasure!

This just goes to show that there are assholes out in the world.
And I think it could discourage people from making webcomics or popular art and posting it on the net for everyone to see since from example they've seen other people making money off of ideas that weren't theirs in the first place.

Oh wow, I had no idea. And my friend has a pair of earrings with the " 'this' sucks" fish on them. I'll have to tell her to throw them out. >>

It's pretty lame how obvious the plagiarism is back to back, however - I'm sure most web cartoonists expect to have their ideas raped to some extent. My stuff isn't nearly as popular as the examples above, but I'll admit I've seen a ton of hot linking and idea/quote/image stealing with self-credit already. It's all part of giving away hours and hours of work publicly for free.

Copyright is only as effective as the lawyers you can afford to protect it.

Any word on the outcome of this?

Officially? I'm not sure. But I think I caught wind somewhere of legal procedures being dealt...-goes to check-

Yeah. Todd Goldman becided to be a p***y and get some lawyers who are basically saying mean and nasty things to the interwebs.

We know that part... But it hasn't really resulted in anything?

Insofar as I've heard, the justice system again fails to bring justice.

Damn, that pisses me off, I mean, I can understand the urge to want to borrow from some of the brilliant webcomics out there. I can't understand actually going through with it to such a blatant extent. And then he goes and attacks the original artists. I wonder if Goldman has any truly original work. Well guess he's gonna have to start coming up with his own stuff if it's all public now.

As if people hadn't seen it happen enough, Hot Topic was apparently selling a t-shirt ripped off from Jess Fink, who is a webcomic artist I've kept track of for a while. I found her through Liz Greenfield (one of those ripped off by Goldman) over the summer and I've read her webcomic ever since (not for the faint of heart wink ).

BUH.
