There's pretty much no way that I could start a Movies and TV subforum without having a Brokeback Mountain thread. I've read the short story, seen the movie (only once) and was quite saddened by it. D:
So this brings up the tell-tale question, did you see it or read the short story? What were your thoughts?

The author's name is Annie Proulx. After the movie came out, they started making copies of just the story in a tiny book form. Before, I believe it came in a larger book of short stories. XD

I didn't read the short story, but I did see the movie. It was ok, wasn't too impressed by it.

Well... it started as a short story in The New Yorker magazine... and I thought the screen writers and director Ang Lee did a terrific job of turning it into a movie, and giving it the space to breathe, giving the viewers a different sense of time than, perhaps, they're used to.
Speaking of Ang Lee, has anyone seen The Wedding Banquet? I highly recommend it. smile

I started reading the short story, but never finished it. The movie could have been done in half the time... or less.

I read the story a few months before I saw the movie. Both are excellent.

~**~Spartans! What is your profession?~**~ .>[For me, personally, I thought the begining was a little slow moving. Some parts were hard to here, for they spoke so quietly though it could have been just my television. Other than that it is a really good movie. I never knew it was a short story. I want to read it now. ^-^]<. *~~*Harooh! Harooh! Harooh!*~~*

I've watched it a few times, and it moved me to tears each time. It's slow, but I thought that was appropriate; it gave it a serene, melancholic feel to the whole movie. The filmography and soundtrack is beautiful, and the acting is amazing. I love Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Williams. I didn't know who Heath Ledger was until I saw the movie, but he's fantastic as well.

Didn't read the book, but did watch the movie and didn't like it at all.
I'd say that for one thing it had a sad ending and I don't like sad endings, but honestly? But the time we got to that, I was feeling so bored and irritated and just relieved that it was finally over that I barely felt sad at all. If I'd liked the movie, or even just the characters, even a little, I would've been crying. And I would've felt mildly depressed for days after. As it was, I just felt mildly annoyed about wasting my time.
It was so very long and slow and dull. And it was neither particularely meaningful or particularely funny or particularely exciting or particularely witty or particularely anything. And yeah I like m/m-ness, but any sympathy or liking I might have felt for the men was completely eradicated by the way they treated their wives. Ennis especially was a total a*****e, to both his wife and his lover.
To each his own, and all, but personally? I really don't understand why so many people seem to have liked it so much. x_x
