I realize that there are people out there who will most likely lynch me for saying this, but I think Gerard Butler made a poor Phantom. He is simply too good looking. It rather ruins the whole idea of the terrifying and corpselike ugliness that Christine was so afraid of. I think Erik's beauty is in his intellect, artistic genius and his heavenly voice, not in how good he looks in his mask. Don't get me wrong, I love looking at Butler in role, but it bothers me sometimes when I hear people say that they are phans because they think the Butler looks hot.
Please not not kill me quite yet. Rather, post your opinion on the topic.

I would have to agree. But it wasn't his appearance that bothered me. I simply thought that the Phantom should have an operatic voice, even if it can't be angelic. Gerard was a rocker at best, and it bothered me that he couldn't hit many of the notes. He was probably casted simply due to sex appeal. But there are other people that have operatic voices and are attractive. Hugh Panaro, for example. Or Josh Groban, even though he hasn't been a Phantom. (But, then again, they probably casted Gerard simply because of the rock sound as well. Most of the general public that hadn't seen Phantom beforehand probably wouldn't be as accepting towards operatic voices.)

I'm gonna need to quote teh almighty Fox on this one... PhantomoftheFox We do not like his voice so rough We do not like his chest so buff We do not like the way he prances We do not like his spandex pantses We do not like his poofy shirt And how we hates that stupid smirk! We do not like his shiny hair We do not like lack his lack of flair Or how he throws around his cape (Hey, Gerry! Take a clue from Snape!) We do not like him here nor there We do not like him anywhere We do not like the Scottish man That's why we second Uta-san 3nodding He got mucho hugs for this.

I really liked his voice. I think it helped portray the part of Erik that Christine was supossed to be attracted to. His voice was definatly best for The Point of No Return. The other songs, not so much.

I thought he was alright. Not the best Phantom, but what can I say, he was the first one I saw *shrugs*. I blame it on Schumacher for casting him.
I kinda liked how raw his voice was (yes I'm weird like that) and I guess they wanted Christine to fall for the guy, hence they sexify Butler so the audience will think 'I can see why' (hey, that rhymes!). But the reason why Christine will be afraid of him is because of his personality (ie. "It's in your soul, where the true distortion lies."). I guess ALW and Schumacher believed they could get away with it since most people probably haven't read the book. Those are my two cents.

He was an ok Phantom. Of course no one will ever top Micheal Crawford. But there were a few parts he could of done better at. But overall he wasn't horrible. Yes is is pretty hott. But even an ugly Phantom is still hott because of the whole mysterious mask wearing. Lol.

He isn't my favourite Erik, but I like him.

I agree, Gerry wasn't the best, but for the director's purpose, he was pretty good (i.e. sexy phantom....whatever!). neutral Neutral on the subject...

I am your angel of music... i'd probably say yes.
i absolutely LOVED his voice! And he really portrayed the phantom very well. The only thing i didnt like was how the director made him fling his cloak around alot. he does it after "The Phantom of the Opera" and in the middle of "The Point of No Return" and after "Why So Silent" and a few other times..
But yea. Oh, and he's also the hottest guy ever *drools*

Come to me, angel of music

I loved his voice the most. It made the "Past the Point of no Return" sound more seducting. If you know what I mean?
