Basic Care

The purpose of cleaning a healing piercing is to remove any dead cells and discharge excreted by the body, As well as any external dirt and bacteria picked up during the day. You are not treating the wound with medicine or making it heal, But rather keeping the area clean while your body is healing itself.Basic hygiene and common sense, With particular attention to the specific area, Are all that are required. You will be the best judge of what works for you. Pay attention to your body. it will tell you if you are doing something wrong. Listen to it.

New piercings should be cleaned 1-3 times daily, Depending on your skin sensitivity, Activities and environment. Continue cleaning every day for the entire healing period. Bear in mind that over cleaning or using too many products is just as bad as not cleaning your piercing. You woulden't wash your hands 3 times in a row with different kinds of soaps, So why do it to your piercing?

Special care For Oral Piercings
Oral piercings heal very quickly and easily, usually within 4-8 Weeks. Jewelry can be changed after healing, but should never be left out even for short periods of time. These piercings close very quickly without jewelry, sometimes within a few minutes. This is especially true of tongue piercings.

-Swelling
Expect the piercing to be rather swollen for at least several days, With residual swelling for a month of so. Sucking on crushed ice constantly for the first few days helps keep swelling down and soothes your mouth. Anti-inflammatories(Ibuprofen/Advil/Motrin) Will also help, but avoid anything that thins your blood(Aspirin, stimulants, Acetominophin/Tylenol) or makes your heart pound.

-Cleaning
You will need to clean the inside of your mouth every time you eat, drink, or smoke. the only exception is bottled water. Rinse for 30-60 seconds with warm salt water, Or non-alcohol antimicrobial/anti-bacterial mouthwash diluted according to the manufacturers recommendations. This will not only clean your mouth, But will soothe mouth pain and speed healing. if you co choose to use mouthwash, Stay away from alcohol based products such as Listerine and other similar store brands. these are far too harsh, And repeated use will usually slow down healing. Instead use a non-alcohol antimicrobial/anti-bacterial mouthwash diluted according to the manufacturers recommendations. Tech 2000 and Biotene are 2 good options.

-Lip/Cheek/Monroe Piercings
In addition to the above suggestions, You will need to clean the outside of the piercing at least twice a day. Antimicrobial/Germicidal soaps tent to be most effective, Especially where oily skin, make-up, and smoking are an issue. Individually packaged sterile saline pads may be helpful for cleaning on the run. Warm salt water soaks on the outside of the piercing are strongly suggested to speed healing and minimize crusty dried discharge.

Helpful Hints & Common Sense

-Stay Healthy
The healthier your lifestyle, the more quickly you can heal. This includes eating well, easing stress and getting enough sleep. A good multivitamin, Especially one containing Zinc and Vitamin C, Can help your body rebuild itself. Avoid getting pierced while you are sick, As your immune system is already strained and healing will be harder.

-KEEP HANDS OFF!
Dirty fingers are an excellent way to get your piercing infected. Wash your hands with an antibacterial soap before handling your piercing or jewelry. Contrary to popular rumor, Dirty rings do not need to be turned through all day. This only pulls germs into the hole. Unless you are cleaning your piercing, KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF!

-Check jewelry
Any jewelry with screw on balls, discs, etc, Should be checked occasionally to make sure the ends are on tight (especially tongues, labrets, and navels).

-Do not constrict your piercing
Your piercing will not heal properly if the jewelry is held in an unnatural position. Avoid wearing tight cloths over a healing piercing. This is especially true of navel piercings.

-Keep make-up and hair products away
Dirty hair should be kept off fresh ear and facial piercings. Clean piercings after applying hair products and make-up, As they contain irritants and may harbor bacteria.

-Be careful when swimming

Sea salts and chlorine may accelerate healing, But the bacteria and pollution in water do not. if possible, Avoid swimming for the first few weeks of a new piercing, And always clean your piercing when you get out of the water.

Use these products

-Liquid Antimicrobial/Germicidal Soap
These products not only kill germs but also remove residue build up from smoking, cosmetics and natural healing discharge. medicated products such as Provon and Satin Soap are most effective and least irritating. The soap used should be free of heavy dyes or perfumes. Liquid tea tree soap is a natural alternative. If possible, keep away from commercial antibacterial soaps containing Triclosan, As they may be less effective and more irritation, especially over time.

-Warm salt water
Warm salt water soaks can work wonders in healing piercings. they help draw out discharge, Soothe irritations, and may prevent infection. they also stimulate circulation which encourages speedy healing. You can use soaks for general healing, To remove dried discharge before cleaning or activity, And to treat minor infections and irritations.

-Sea Salt
(non-iodized) Works best as it is free of additives. most table salt contains extra chemicals (aluminum, magnesium, iodide, etc), Which can irritate and sting, And dextrose (Sugar), Which can cause yeast infections. many non-iodized salts and kosher salts are natural sea salt. Read the label: If it contains only sodium chloride(Salt), And maybe a form of calcium(-Phosphate or -Silicate to minimize clumping), it's good. Epsom salts are too strong and are not meant for surface wound soaking. Don't use them.
-To Mix
Dissolve 1/4 Teaspoon of sea salt into one cup(8 Ounces) of hot water(Distilled if possible).

-Saline Rinses
Salt water(Saline) rinses can also be an effective way to clean piercings. They are especially useful where other cleaning solutions may do too harsh, Or where a more mild and less irritating cleaning solution is desired. Rinses can be done with the sea salt recipe listed above, or with sterile wound care saline (Such as H2Ocean). Beware of contact lens solution, As it often contains undesirable ingredients.

Do Not Use these Products

-Rubbing Alcohol
Alcohol is far too harsh. it irritates and dries out the skin and can delay healing. It also burns and stings, And may not be as effective on germs (When used topically) as previously though. Commercial witch hazel solutions containing alcohol should be avoided.

-Hydrogen Peroxide
Peroxide does kill many bacteria, but it also destroys the healthy skin around the piercing. If used long enough, it can eat away at the skin and actually keep your piercing from healing. Stay away from it.

-Antibiotic ointments

These include such products as Neosporin, Bacitracin, and Triple antibiotic ointments. these do not work for more than 2 weeks, As your body becomes tolerant to the antibiotic in that time. This makes them worthless for healing piercings. They also have large amounts of petroleum jelly in them, which keeps oxygen out of the piercing and creates the perfect warm, moist enviroment for bacteria to breed. The greasy barrier also keeps water and cleaning solutions from effectively reaching your piercing, Making it impossible to clean. read the label: "Do not use on puncture wounds".

-Betadine (Providone Iodine)/Hibiclens
These solutions may be used for first aid or surgical wound care, but for long term care they are too strong and may delay healing. Betadine may be useful to clear up and infection, But when used too often it can actually kill healthy skin cells. it will also discolor gold jewelry. Many people develop sensitivity to these solutions over time.

-Benzylkonium Chloride (pierced ear solution)

While sometimes used in the past, Benzylkonium Chloride (such as Bactine® or Ear care solution) has proven to be problematic for many people. It is not effective of a cleanser as antimicrobial soaps, And is far too harsh compared to other cleansers. Most BZK products have a very short shelf life and are seldom discarded after the date of expiry, leading to problems with the contamination of the solution. Additionally, There has been some confusion over ingredients and it seems some manufactures may be using formulas which are not compatible with human tissues.

Infection/Irritation

If you take proper care of your piercing, You may never have to deal with either of these, but just in case...

-Infection
These come from exposure to bacteria and other contaminants (By contact with dirty hands, Other people's body fluids, Dust, Unclean jewelry, swimming in dirty water, Etc.). They are often easily avoided with common sense and hygiene. You will usualy know if our piercing is infected if: The surrounding area becomes red, swollen, hot to the touch or itchy; You get discharge that is dark yellow, greenish, bloody, or has an odor. Facial piercing infections are often accompanied by a small fluid-filled pimple on the hole.

Note: Normal piercings secrete a white/pale yellow liquid during healing. This is not a sign of infection. It contains dead lymph cells, Lymph and blood plasma are a sign of healing. Healed piercings may secrete a stinky white substance from the oil glands. it is also normal to come off easily in cleaning.

-If An Infection occurs

DO NOT REMOVE THE JEWELRY! Infections are more easily treated if an open wound exists for antiseptics to enter the wound, and for discharge to exit. Without jewelry, the surface closes over, trapping the infection inside and tunning it from a local surface infection into a generalized body infection.
Hot salt water soaks are the best way to calm minor infections. They help draw out discharge and contaminants, Soothe raw tissue, and stimulate the body's natural healing mechanisms. Do hot salt water soaks several times a day as needed. However, even if the infection clears up, it will return if you do not eliminate the original cause of contamination. Pay close attention to how you treat your piercing, and try to find the problem.
Of course, In the event of a serious infection, see your doctor. Bear in mind the he/she may not be familiar with healing patterns and problems specific to body piercings. If you wish to keep your piercing, Firmly and clearly explain this. If infection (rather than allergy or scarring) is indeed the problem, leaving the jewelry in will not cause complications.

-Irritation
More often than not, what you think is an infection is really irritation, Caused by anything that puts pressure on the jewelry or holds it in an unnatural position. If your piercing is red, Swollen right around the hole, Peeling, excreting white or yellow fluid or blood, or appears to have a solid lump or bubble of discolored skin around it, it's probably irritated. This is a sign that you are subjecting it to excessive abuse.
Common causes are: Wearing restrictive clothing over piercings (navel, n****e); Sleeping on it (navels and ear cartilage); Holding the phone against it (ear lobe and cartilage);sex too soon (genitals); getting hit or pulled on; or playing with it.
If your piercing gets irritated, Figure out what is causing the problem. Be particularly aware of automatic actions (Unconsciously playing with it, Grinding teeth with tongue piercings, etc.). Usually the symptoms will go away if you eliminate the cause. Warm salt water soaks can help ease irritation and heal any existing tears, and prevent infection from setting in on the raw tissue.
