I cried
sad I was hesitant in seeing it because I remember when I was younger, I saw a bit on TV but my mom didn't want me watching it. Overall, the movie is pretty good, mostly due to the great acting by Hilary Swank and Chloe Sevigny.

I thought it was very well-done in every sense . . . but I know now to stay away from movies involving rape and torture. Boys Don't Cry and Sybil stayed in my head for weeks after I watched them and I don't want to be thinking about the cruelty of those incidences - especially since they're true and the victims were led to believe that it was their own fault - so much.
I know what you mean. Movies about hate crimes make me incredibly uncomfortable, but I tend to watch them anyways. I suppose I just want to acknowledge that these horrible things really do happen and it's just my way of paying my respects to all the victims of hate, rape, and abuse.
If anyone's interested in watching similar movies, I recommend
A Girl Like Me: The Gwen Araujo Story, which is about "a transgender teenager who was murdered after it was discovered by acquaintances that she had male genitalia."
Also,
The Laramie Project which is a documentary film about the murder of Matthew Shepard. I'm pretty sure this one's more well-known.
