I know that this forum has so far been a place of laughter and fun, but someone had to break that trend... crying

I have no idea how this story is being covered on the national level, but since I live in Virginia, and virtually everyone in this state applies to Virginia Tech and/or knows someone who goes there, it's been absolutely dominating the news since mid-morning. In fact, my high-school was let out three hours early today due to "intense winds" that were expected to damage education trailers and create danger on roads and for bus drivers, but I actually think it was a cover-up for this whole thing...

Anyways, I'm just wondering how everyone is feeling on this subject. For those of you cave-dwellers out there who don't know what I'm talking about, Virginia Tech is a highly competitive, prestige college in this fine state, and today, a lone gunman walked in and opened fire in a dorm, killing (correct me if I'm wrong) one student. Two hours later, and after a poor police response to the first shooting, the gunman opened fire on an engineering lab and killed thirty-one students, then himself, bringing the death count up to thirty-three. This is recorded as the worst school shooting in American history-- bigger than Columbine.

Maybe I'm feeling more bruised than the rest of you because I've actually sent test scores to this school, had prospects of going there, have known people who graduated and went there for college, and have an uncle who did graduate work there, but I really need a little feedback from everyone else. I haven't had a chance to discuss this with my classmates yet but I sure would love to hear from someone.

Say a prayer tonight, folks. crying heart

I didn't hear about this.

School shootings on any level are horrifying. Though murders interest me to a degree, school shootings give me nightmares and extreme paranoia. The fact that a person could go and shoot a bunch of people- kids- that are trying to higher their education is disgusting.

Columbine has been out done... and it's pretty close to the anniversary of that date (4-20). Christ... Going to school in Colorado was hell around this time. Security tightened. Lockers and backbacks were searched almost daily. And it was drilled into our heads what had happened. Hell, all the libraries in the highschools have metal detectors on them. Like that's going to help anything at all.

I'm... horrified about this.

Okay, I'm pissed off now. Genuinly pissed off.

I was watching CNN tonight with family and a few friends and they had this ******** slut Criminal Profiler named Pat Brown on. What did she say to get my riled up?

To paraphrase all the s**t she spewed out of the hole under her nose, she stated that violence in movies, television, internet, video games, paintball, air-soft, etc. caused this. That they cause all shootings done. It's bullshit. The fact of the matter is, some people just grab a gun and shoot other people. Most of the time, these people were bullied in school.

And then what did she say? That students should be armed and walls should be put around the instutions of learning. Great deal of help that'll do. When the officers arive on scene, how're they going to guess who the murder is? Damn it, people should concentrate more on things they can control. For example, making it where kids have to wear a helmet while riding a bike so less brain damage due to bike accidents happens. We can't control shootings. And profiling what a killer is? Bull s**t. Anyone has the capacity to shoot another person. The will to survive comes into play.

People that blame the media for what others do are generally irritating to me.

They did the same thing for Columbine, since Eric Harris and the other guy (whose name escapes me) played Doom a lot. Honestly, I think people will just act like the game/movie/form of media is affecting them to either make a statement or try to make a scapegoat out of something.

Rock n' roll, also known as devil music, was portrayed the same way when it got going. Comic books, too. Blaming the media one imbibes for their actions is an absolutely ridiculous generalization about everything that person is. People aren't that easily persuaded to go off and shoot people in the head just because someone did it on the television and acted like it was okay.

The only people who do this kind of thing were mentally unstable in the first place, I believe.

Aww, Popo, that makes me so sad. Seriously, I like, started crying when I read this. I don't think you should worry about it in the sense of it happening again. The trend has been a different school per massacre. I know that isn't very reassuring, but damn, my heart is in pain for you, Popo. You are definitely high on my priority list in prayers.

Even though I don't know you very well, I love you, and wish you the best.

They covered that in my newspapers here as well eek It was shocking to read, even more so when I read it happened in Virginia.

I'm thankful nothing like that has ever happened here (or it simply wasn't a big enough case to go reported. The most we get here are bold and botched up robbery attempts that leave students scared and short of $50). It does put this paranoia into me all the same, the fact that anyone that go into a school building with a weapon and do whatever they want— be it robbery or murder.

Definitely sending out a prayer for you, Lovely :c *huggles and loves* heart

i go to high school on a college campus, and it's been hell here. Chaos. Pandemonium. Nobody knows what to do, nor do they know what's going on. And the scariest bit, for me at any rate...
One of my friends was on a college visit that day. She was there when it all happened. And i too have friends there. Any of them could have been hurt or worse... i've never lost anything more permanent than a lizard.i hate killing... how can a human hurt another human without a reason? i just don't understand malice.

The only thing that annoys me when these things happen is the response to only certain events. My heart goes out to all those who died in the VT shooting, but why does this 1 event get so much attention when people die from many different things in America each day.

I know a lot of people died, but think of all the poverty and the drugs killing thousands each day.
