I just wanted to make a thread about the Virgina Tech tradgedy that happened the 16th of April...

I've just been really upset by this whole thing and wondered if it affected anyone else, its impossible to understand it all, likewise impossible to describe how or why it affects me so much. My heart aches for the people who have suffered and lost. I wish I could do something more, and feel helpless not knowing what to do, I hope you can all spare a moment and send a prayer or hope for these people to have strength to get through this horrible time...

Yeah, I don't do too well with tradgedies like this. . .I empathize too much. I am going to ask the dean of my school if we can all wear orange and maroon on Friday though, like the students of the college have asked. We have a dress-down day then anyway. Too bad it's too short of notice to get bracelets or something like that made.

I never know what to do. . .but I want to do something to help.

These shootings always make me depressed. I always find myself crying for them. Being silent all day (for other reasons), really left my mind open to do whatever and it kept wandering back to Virginia Tech. I watched a special on the gunman and his face is now forever in my mind. Why didn't anyone listen to his English professor when she told them something was not right? I mean, a person must have had a very damaging life, bad coping mechanisms, or some sort of disorder to go off the deep end like that. The special did one part where it analyzed the classic mind of a killer such as him and it scared me a little because I know people who could someday fit that profile. I don't think any of them would do something like this but it does make you think.

I know it must sound horrible but I often empathize with the killer when they are a classic case like him. I sort of understand how they victimize themselves enough to do something this drastic. That hatred for the world. I don't believe it is right in any way but I just sort of... understand.

Other than him, there are two people who really stand out in my mind. The first is the original girl who was shot in the dorm. Why her? I highly doubt it was random. He seemed to plan it. So, why her? Did she know something? Was he obsessed with her? What? The other person is the german professor who survived the Holocaust. It's hard to imagine witnessing two things this horrible. I mean he lived through one just to be killed by the other.

That's my rant about it.

It really upsets me that we can't do more for people like that. Part of the reason that no one listened to the English teacher was because there really wasn't anything they could do about it. He wasn't a minor, and the only way to get an adult to go to therapy/counseling against their will would be for them to be arrested. I wish we had more of a system in place to help people like that and prevent another tragedy like this.

The only real theory they have about the girl right now is that he was obsessed with her. She had a serious boyfriend of two years and no one has ever seen them together, so they doubt she even knew him. Some of his highschool classmates said he never talked to anyone, and they could see him watching her/falling in love with her but never talking to her until he tried to that day.

The only thing that can be done is to remember those that died and to educate others. I've find myself upset by other random killings, but there is little to do after the matter. I mean a little girl was molested and chopped to pieces. This kind of thing upset me the most because she was just a child. So How does one cope? I try to help every person I can in any way I can. Help the survivors deal with the pain and keep an eye out for anyone who could do this kind of thing. I've posted a list of online names that are used by ****** and try to be a helpful ear, but there isn't much else can do.

You can pray if you like, or stand up and protest a change to your government or something to show how you feel. Out here the government is adding stricter laws to bullies and added in online bullying to the list of things kids can be suspended from school for. However, one needs to get the kids to talk in order for something still be done in that case, yet it is a step in the right direction. They are also making it so people need a licence to just buy ammo, we just had a school shooting here back in September too. It is against the law to own most guns, aside from rifles for hunting that are breach loaded, meaning one shot at a time, people are still getting weapons illegally from the states. So they are going after anyone who sells guns out here and making it harder to get ammo and the like. So people are trying to make things better. As for the States it is a matter of changing the right to bare arms and that is not likely to happen unless a lot of people stand up against the government and show that there needs to be changes made.

Anyways, That is enough rambling out of me. Sorry to go on and on like this.

I highly doubt this country will ever change the bill of rights. It's just too important. I'm sure a lot of people are afraid to change one of those original amendments because it may change more in the future. For the time period that the second amendment was written, it was a very important amendment. I totally understand why the right to bear arms is in the constitution. I wouldn't want to remove it completely, but I do think we need to restrict it like crazy. The gunman at VT used semi-automatic hand guns if I'm not mistaken. Average citizens do not need that at all. It scares me what we have acess to. We can buy what our military and police force use. We have no need for those guns unless we plan on killing a lot of people in a short amount of time. That says it all.

A part of me does believe we should be able to keep a very simple gun in our homes for self-defense. I'm a very weak girl. If someone broke into my house, I'd be powerless. That scares me a little. (Of course, I'm also the kind of person who could never kill anyway. Not even in self defense. I could only do it by accident and even then I would feel guilty until the day I die.) However.if it saved enough lives in the long run, I would have no issue with a complete ban on guns. However, that will probably never happen for the simple fact the right to bear arms is one of the cardinal rights given to us in the constitution.

This is such a hard issue. I do think if we lost our right to bear arms, we should make our police force stronger.
