fellow magic players i just want to get your opinion on which format you think is better, standard or extended, i personally like standard because i dont have as many old cards

I personally only play standard...but that is only because I havent been playing as long as some players...so I like using only the sets that I have been around since the beginning.

Extended is fun once in a while though, it really opens up a s**t load of cards.

Usally I would say Extended, but I don't really like Extendeds meta right now. It seems that cards in newer sets just can't handle the great win conditions from Odyssey and Onslaught blocks. So the meta is kinda at a standstill and major decks just cycle in and out of first place. The new decks that pop up seem to be very unconsistant such as Sunny Side Up, Dirty Kitty and Balancing Tings, giving them very short life spans as the meta just goes back to Aggro Loam, Flow Rock, Gifts Rock, Affinity, TEPS, and either Boros or Domain Zoo, very few decks seem to pop up.

Standard on the other hand is costantly changeing offering new challanges to players costantly, if a new set doesn't change that the meta changes as a new deck becomes tier one to contend with the deck that was teir one, that was played to contend with the last deck that was teir one. Standards loops and holes are much more entertaining than current extended meta.

I personally think that Extended is better. If someone has been playing longer than another player, they would generally have an advantage. This being both experience and the power of older cards. Not to mention that not everyone has the money to keep up with all the new sets to play Standard.

I agree that the Extended Metagame is disappointingly static. A new deck really only stands a chance in hell if it's a total surprise, and no one is prepared for it. And then it goes on the 'net, and is planned for, and can never consistantly win again.

Standard, on the other hand, is constantly shifting, although I doubt very much that Dragonstorm, U/B lockdown, or MGA will ever drop below top 8 while Time Spiral Block is active. Personally, I'd rate my current T2 rogue deck as having a 60-70 % chance of winning a match against any of the three, but at least part of that is because my deck will not be planned for in anyone's sideboard.

Some, yes. Others, no.

Ice Age, Fallen Empires, Homelands, and Alliances come to mind as being particularly bad sets. Yes, one or two good cards came out of each of them (IA = Brainstorm, Incinerate, FE = Hymn to Tourach, HL = Merchant's Scroll, Autumn Willow, AI = FoW), but overall, the sets are very, very weak in comparison to more recent blocks like Ravnica and Time Spiral.

Extended is more exciting in my opinion... there are a lot more card combinations in extended than in standard (cloudpost + vesuva XD).

But i personally play standard because it's more challenging, forces me to expand my card pool, and it's so much more rewarding to break a card in standard than in extended.

Plus I like being able to take my deck to Friday Night Magic without worries.

Sometimes when playing casual I play extended, but only when my opponent(s) is playing extended as well.

I heard they were bringing back Incinerate in 10th Edition...

I also heard they were bringing back Dark Ritual...

If so standard will get much more exciting - just because of Dark Ritual alone...

Myself, I prefer vintage....

BUT EXT and STD have their good points.

EXT- wide range of cards with an existing balancing banned list.

STD- more level playing field that forces change

VIN- More challenge as skilled players introduce new cards for or against old tactics....

I've been playing long enough to have extended stuff, im just too poor really to be able to keep my old cards and still have enough trade bait to stay afloat in the new type 2.

I usually start trading away cards from whatever sets are about to roll out soon towards newer stuff when the new season starts.

Extended does seem sorta interesting to me. But even if I had the money/thieving skills to play it seriously, I think I'd be annoyed that certain awful annoying decks/cards that I'd be happy to see roll out of type 2 would be seeing play again.

So ja, I just play type 2 strictly for the most part, aside from my own casual semi-extended deck, since its just extended from having kamigawa in it. So like, it was totally type 2 before Time Spiral came in.

@Mustache: Good too see you on here. Hehe, you totally owe me and Lia 5000g though:User Image

I don't really have a preference. I play Standard more often because its more popular. I occasionally play extended events though around here they rarely happen. Even though I have a deck for everything but the eternal formats a majority of them are Standard. Currently, I have "This Girl" "G/B Dredge" "Solar Pox" "MGA"
