They're around, just scattered. The biggest problem is maintaining a PbP game. They require a level commitment most people can't, or won't, give. Personally I suck at PbP. I just don't have the dedication to it. The main drain is that I'm already part of live gaming group so I don't really need to play with an online group.
Personally I think the best option would be a Fan-Fic/Short-story Anthology format, using a particular game's rules as guide, would be better then a back and forth PbP game. I'd be more then willing to pass control of a character to another writer(player) as long as they follow the personality profile and action guide.

Actually I've been thinking about that and something on the lines of a PbM would work better. Keep it mostly to PMs and update a thread somewhere to keep a public copy of the info players should know.
Now, if only I can get my hands on the PbM rules a friend of mine use a while back ...

I was half heartedly trying to build my own guild based on the idea. I was looking at combining several different d20 rules sets to cover a wide array of character types but that stalled and has been in nosedive ever since. It's to bad my old Long Form RP posts got deleted when guild that got me join Gaia in the first place closed. Funny, I was asked in RW by friends to come onboard the guild and work on the rules mechanics. "No matter where you go, there you are."
I did come up with this crazy idea on how to handle 1/4 leveling.

It just so happens that I have had the same idea of having an online D&D gaming session forum thread on a guild. unfortunetely I require the gold to start a guild of my own. Perhaps we could have a session here in this guild. I am more thatn willing to DM a campaign I have been recently worrking on.
PM me or post on this thread for any suggestions or comments.

Most of my online DnD crews have disbanded and I had to move away from my old IRL group, if anyone knows of a online crew, I'm up for it!

I have only tried online gaming one other time before and I think its just that its easier to schedule offline. I don't know if this is just me, cause I am personally up for trying it again. Also it goes with having trustful players since we all can't have webcams to show the dice rolls.

Actually your Gaia Journal is good place to store character sheets. Then link it into the first post or when it's appropriate. This can also be done for Dice Rolls. Open a thread in Chatter Box dedicated to rolls for your game, then link to the post with the actual roll. Since Gaia tracks posting times a GM can easily figure out if your trying to cheat.
I'd love to see a random number generator added to Towns. It would make RPing there easier.

Thanks to you all this new bit of information will make my job alot easier. I have been hoping Voltaire! Voltaire! would let us have a roleplay sub forum. I was planning on being DM.

Wow Brasten never really thought of that. That actually makes the chatterbox useful. I know there are a bunch of online character sheet hosters. I use TheTangledWeb well thats the one I know about is the one there. Random number generator in towns hmm I have actually never gone into towns just because usually the topics look like chatterbox spam.

I don't use the sheet hosting sites. It's easy enough to format a decent character sheet that you can stick in Gaia Post. It ends up looking more like a monster entry the a PnP sheet but then again there are no Pens here. That way I don't have to worry about them going down for mataince or the like, and taking the sheet with them. If Gaia goes down the game is basically on hold anyways.
The only diceless(no-chance) based RPG I've seen was the one put out Marvel Comics. It's no longer in print because it was mistyped and "bragged" about it's diceless system.
I see Dice(and chance) as being important parts of a successful game. Currently there is no way inside Towns to do that. Back posting into Chatterbox while your in Towns would just slow everything down as people switch between windows, post, and then wait for the DM to check the results. There is also the posting speed limit, which would prevent rolling of many different die types quickly, say like a D&D sneak attack done by a Rogue with a dagger. That's a 1d4 and Xd6, two posts.
If you get away from the main population groups you can have a decent time. Also it looks like Chatter Box because there is very little else people can do in Towns. There is a theater company that performs every now and then. There are also other groups that stage events and get-togethers. However the vast majority have nothing better to do then chat/spam and socialize/fo-hump.

Im still working on all the gliches so we can get started on one of my campaigns. Although it looks like we cant do this with just one thread. Im also curious as to what level adjustment to have you all start as. Post here with suggestions.

And as we can see, the difficulties with RPs done in a Play by Post style on Gaia. People don't, or can't, commit themselves to an online gaming group the way they do to one in the real world.
