So, today, April the 18th is supposedly a Day of Silence for people who are gay, lesbian, or bisexual and cannot come out of the closet for fear of being yelled at or ridiculed. A lot of students in my school participated in it, but majority who didn't ridiculed them instead. Now, the town I live in is really small, and super closed minded which is why it's so surprising that a lot of kids participated, and we have quite a few gay people. Has anyone faced ridicule or gotten yelled at for being gay, lesbian, or bi? I think it's rediculous, especially since this week (at our school at least) is Diversity Week.
Wow. So that was a total rant, sorry! Was this going on at anyone else's school? Did anyone else participate?
DISCUSS! -Day of Silence/Participation in -Being ridiculed for what you believe in -Anything along those lines...

Pfeh. I live in a similar-sounding area, except there was no Day of Silence participation. I get the feeling that nobody would do it even if knowledge of the Day of Silence was more widespread. Poopy, but there you are... ._.
And, yeah, where I reside (that is, south of Pittsburgh) is pretty much a homophobic area. Some of my best friends growing up were lesbians, and I faced a lot of stigma and questioning just because I refused to abandon them when they came out.
When I dated for the first time, it was almost like the whole school breathed a collective sigh of relief. Like, it was noticeable how much more accepted I became - people talked to me who would otherwise have either ignored me or mocked me. stare
I can only imagine what it must have been like to grow up homosexual in this area. No wonder so many of the 'out' gay kids are depressed...

I participated, if only because I have so many LGBT friends, but in reality I don't see how being silent spreads awareness. I saw it more as a personal exercise in letting go of small things. It's incredable how much petty conversation you can cut out of your day. I talked in class when I had to, but really it was freeing not being bogged down by so many words.
I think people should try not talking for a day- just as a personal excercise. It's interesting.

Huh? Today's the Day of Silence? We are having a Haiti Day instead at school. It's probably because LGBT is not a problem here. We do not see them as special. It's not like if they have a different culture. To us, one's sexuality is in the same category as one's favorite food.
That's only what's on the surface.
I remember that when I told some of my friends that I was bi, many changed their attitude towards me. They seem to be more... careful.

dreamer_aura_laforest I remember that when I told some of my friends that I was bi, many changed their attitude towards me. They seem to be more... careful. That's no good, although I think I understand what you mean. I came out of the closet to a few of my friends a couple months ago. Most of them were fine with it, but the others started to avoid me later on... Bah, it's so stupid. What's wrong with being gay, lesbian, or bisexual? I understand that it goes against some religions, but it's not like we try and force it upon people... At least, I don't.

No one participated at my school... But I believe most of it counted for the fact that I go to a private Catholic school. No one is open about if they're gay, lesbian or bi there simply because a lot of us are afraid that either A.) We'll be kicked out of school simply for it or B.) We'll be sent to COURAGE. An orginization to "help you realize that you are not gay, lesbian or bi" and tell you that no one is. And then they make you join the catholic church...
I participated in it but I'm usually silent most of the time simply because I don't really like anyone at my school.

nonnos Ahm...sorry to interupt. How did you decide that you're Bi? I didn't decide it. I discovered it when I noticed that I like to stare at girl's boobs and hips and that I often have sexual fantasies about women. I make out with girls in my dreams. Men's body doesn't seem special at all in my eyes, but pretty girls' does. BL and BG are boring, but GL makes my eyes fall out so much I'm in it. I have a crush on my female friend. So... bisexual is my euphemism for lesbian. Edit: Still, I'm not 100% sure of my sexual orientation because I'm not 25 yet. My body is not fully mature and I'm most likely in the instable phase where one's sexuality is not fixed. @ Synthaes Death: That's strange. I was in a private Catholic secondary school and now I'm in a private Jesuite college, but they are all open to homosexuals. In both schools I've seen people of the same sex flirting (and almost saw them kiss, but I either run away before they can or arrive too late). I guess I'm lucky. Where is your school? P.S.: Girls, please do not avoid me. I can't do anything to you over the Net neutral

Mmmm... I would have participated in day of silence, but there was something that I had to speak for, keep in mind I'm having to remember back quite a few months. It was something for school, so, I didn't have much of a choice. Like, an oral part to an exam or something. Day of Silence < getting good grades.
Anyway, I don't live in a small area, but, I do attend a very conservative school. Being agnositc, rather than Christian, I do get a lot of crap for not believing in Jesus and what not. Though, most people tend to back away from it, apparently I argue well.
And, also, I am gay, but, I could care less right now about gay Pride. as I said, my grades have more importance to me than parading around my sexuality, and it will stay that way until I graduate college.

I participate every year. I actually have to get the ball rolling on that for the GSA here. My group takes forever to get things done sweatdrop . I break the silence every year cursing out someone for picking on the day.

I'm completely straight, but most of my friends are by, lesbian, or gay. I usually participate with them, so that they don't get lonely, but I usually end up breaking it because some dorknob homophobe decides he's gonna pick on MY friends, pish. I almost got suspended last year because some idiot started picking on my best friend and I made sure he was homophobe for a good reason, they have friends who don't like them getting picked on. So, if you have any issues, send them to me.
