Can someone explain to me just exactly who Urza is? I do know he's an artificer, much like Mishra, but is he from the future?
An outline of his character would be nice. sweatdrop

He's a planeswalker/artificier from LONG ago..... he crafted KArn as well as a multitude of ingenious devices. Read the Ice Age/Time spiral books as well as the flavor text of Urza named cards and many non-mirrodin artifacts

He's a Planeswalker from Dominaria's distant past. He and his brother, Mishra, are responsible for 95% of the disasters that occur on any given plane.
Seriously, though. Both were trained under Tocasia, but due to some sibling issue or another, they started fighting each other, which became known as 'the Brother's War'. Which happens sometime before the timeline of Alpha, Beta and so on.
After the Brother's War, Urza and Mishra pretty much fall off the scope until the Urza's Saga block, when Urza once again returns, create's Karn and the Weatherlight, and does all sorts of other stuff, including snuffing out Serra's realm to power something or other.
Flash forward to the Invasion Block, when Urza assembles a team of planeswalkers to combat the Phyrexian invasion. Excessive amounts of destruction occur, mostly due to Urza not being able to construct a plan that doesn't kill almost everyone in the process.
Further forward, we know that Urza and Mishra are the ones ultimately responsible for the rifts that are the cause of the Time Spiral Block. It remains to be seen if either of the two bone heads will actually help FIX the damage.

necro12398 not on any given plane ONLY Dominara Urza snuffs out at least one plane other than Dominaria. I'm sorry, but I don't take the plane-wide destruction of the Brother's War or the Tolarian cataclysm as 'meant well'. necro12398 and the ones that yawgamoth attacks Huh? Try using sentences, I can understand you much better that way. necro12398 and time spiral block WTF i've never hread of it and i've read most of the magic the gather books Time Spiral Block. You know, the sets that came out in Fall 06, Winter 06, and the one that prereleases this weekend?

I kind of hope no one fixes the rifts XD This block has been very exciting...

The way I understand the genesis of the rifts, each time world-shattering magic is used on the plane, it stresses the fabric of the plane. Whenever something larger than a single summoning comes into the plane (such as the Rathi overlay), it damages the plane. The cumulative damage of multiple events was enough to open numerous rifts.
Major Disasters/World Shaking Magic in Dominarian history
The Brother's War Freyalise's 'World Spell' which ended the Ice Age The Tolarian Disaster The Invasion (Which really ought to be a few separate disasters)
There are probably others that I don't recall, but 3/4 of those directly involve Urza.

Here is the link to Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urza and here is the "beginning" Urza was born on the first day of the year 0 AR to a noble family of Argive, one of the three coastal kingdoms of Terisiare. His younger brother Mishra was born on the last day of the same year. Urza's mother died while giving birth to Mishra, so his father took another younger wife who did not like the brothers. Ten years later his father fell ill. Fearing the fate of his sons after his death, the father sent Urza and Mishra to his old friend Tocasia to serve as students at her archaeological dig.

Further forward, we know that Urza and Mishra are the ones ultimately responsible for the rifts that are the cause of the Time Spiral Block. It remains to be seen if either of the two bone heads will actually help FIX the damage. Well your somewhat right... but he and Mishra were brothers, who found the Thran ruins(which later were discovered to be a portal to Phyrexia)... inside they found a stone that held the essanse of a Planeswalker that held the portal to phyrexia closed. The stone split into two and Urza and Mishra each got a different peice, because of this they became quite jelious of each other. Eventually Mishra tried to get Urza's "might" stone from him by force, Tocasia trying to stop them was killed in the process and they each went their separet ways. Over time they each gained power in the plane of Dominaria, eventually leading to the Brothers war, this war caused islands to sink and several world powers to fall... they also redused much of the plane into glass or uninhabbitable areas. At the end however Urza used a newly discovered magic to kill his borther, as he saw how monstrus the war really was. After that Urza's "might stone" and Mishra's "weak stone" combined into Urza, and gave him the power to planeswalk. He made many friends in the galaxy like Xantcha and Serra(another planeswalker). After awile he returned back to Dominaria to see if he couldn't close the portal to phyrexia forever, this backfired as Serra's plane(which was infested with Phyrexians) was absorbed in the process, lossing him a great ally. Later on when he finally started his full scale war with Phyrexia his planeswalker "apprentiss" took a few continents away from Dominaria, just in case they where to be destroyed in the war. The bad part is that at the end of this war(Phyrexia being the one who lost) Urza was thought to be killed, no one really knows whether he is or not, as he hasn't been in the story yet

But these only include Dominaria... to the rest of the multi-verse, he is probably little more than average in what he does... he is just one of the most powerful in the multi-verse, but not well known to others other than the people of Earth(duh)
