Super Mario 64

User Image

Super Mario 64 begins with a letter from Princess Peach inviting Mario to come to her castle for a cake she has baked for him. When he arrives, Mario learns that Bowser has invaded the castle and imprisoned the Princess and her servants within it using the power of 105 of the castle's 120 power stars. Many of the castle's paintings are portals to other realms, in which Bowser's minions keep watch over the stars. Mario searches for the portals, entering them to recover the stars. Mario gains access to more places in the castle as he gains more stars, eventually gaining access to three Bowser battles at 8, 31 and 70 stars. Defeating the final Bowser releases Peach and restores the power of the stars to the castle. Peach rewards Mario by baking the cake that she had promised him.

It's one of the best Mario games, played alright on the DS but sometimes found it hard to turn around on the spot. Managed to get all the stars on my N64 only to get on the roof and Yoshi to give me 99 lives...yeah, thanks Yoshi. Beginning of the game would have been nice.

Nintendo did an amazing job of transforming the mushroom kingdom into a living 3D world. The PS1 had 3D platformers but they paled in comarison to this platforming adventure and in my opinion nothing has really lived up to it either. But honestly though who would live in that castle, where do they sleep, and wouldn't it freak you out if mushroom people kept materialising from the walls?

I remember when critics were jumping on their soap box a declaring this 'the greatest videogame of all time', and I almost agreed.
