Ok yesterday I had a swim meet and I was in the last heat of 100 back, My couch walk up and said, "Hey don't worry about it, I know I put you in a fast heat but with the recorded time you're suppose to get 5th so its not last." I got pissed thinking "5th? Hell no" I did the race and got 3rd cutting my time by 8 seconds, I walk up to to my couch and said, "I kicked that paper's a**." He smiled and said, "I knew you wouldn't be happy about getting 5th, thats why I told you." I just stand there with a blank expression like, WTf.

Heh, good coaches know the best motivations for their swimmers. I can't remember any specific incidents like that happening to me (it's been a while... my coach mostly says "you know what to do", and I do - smooth and fast, breathe only at 20m and 35m, head down into the wall - so there's really nothing else to say). I do remember once before a 50 free being so excited about it, the coach that my coach was talking to commented that I probably didn't get this excited for an 800! Heh, I love my sprints...
Hmm, well one motivator that my coach used on me that worked had to do with my technique. I'd been trying for months to do bent arm recovery on freestyle properly, but it wasn't working. My coach had mentioned a few times that I should try out straight arm recovery, that it might work better for me. I kept resisting the idea because I thought that all the best swimmers in the world did bent arm recovery. Then he mentioned that Inge de Bruijn (you know, still has a world record in the 50m free long course) had a straight arm recovery. And then I didn't resist the idea so much... now my stroke has a straight arm recovery, and it works really well for me. I'm much faster than I was before.

something similar...my coach made up my time for championships so it was 10 seconds faster than my real time, and I was freaking out because I hate to get last just as much as the next, because of it I paniced my way to 4th place XP, unfortunately, I needed help getting out of the pool and walking around after because my legs were giving out on me and locking up every other step XD All she could say to me after I succeeded was "You need to drop a few more seconds..." >.<

With my summer coach, he doesn't worry about getting kids to win heats or whatever. He puts the focus more on personal improvement, so that we don't freak out if we come in last or whatever. If we win, we might get a "Hey, you won! Good job!" but it's not very common. Usually it's: "Hey! You dropped two tenths! That looked pretty good." With my high school coach, he puts some pressure on the varsity kids, but I'm not on varsity so it doesn't matter for me.

my coach one time just before a race came up to me and screamed and yelled and bitched at me for about five minutes, just saying all kinds of things about how i slack and blah blah my race came up i was so angry and adrenaline was pumping so hard i dropped three seconds on my fifty, i got out of the water he came up to me smiling and i almost punched him, he kept talking about he knew i would respond to anger, and all i wanted to do was hold him under water til his feet stopped kicking

the only reason they do that is to estimate where u may get. wut ur supposed to do is prove it wrong. i do all the time and that shows that im doing wut i need to do at practice.
