Have you ever seen this miniature figures game? Give it a try, it`s easy enough to learn fast, but with enough variation to keep your interest for a very long time. The system is quite easy to explain. Each side moves, shoots, and if they`re in range, shot. Any shooting or melee combat is resolved with dice throws. First a trow to see if the attacks connect, then to see if it wounds, and finally, the victims throw to see if they save said wound. Of course, there`s more than that, but that`s the basis of the whole system. Beyond the basic game, Games Workshop support the line with a great deal of supplements, figures, background and what-not. There`s a variety of armies, each one is very flexible in terms of what to collect. Customization is not only allowed, but encouraged! Personally, that`s a big factor to like. About the background, it is set in the far future, a dismal galaxy full of bloody regimes, conmstant stryfe, and void of any hope. Bad place to live in, great place to write stories about. Ah! And just for the record, I play Space Marines (superhuman warriors in power armor), and Space Orks (the funniest and most brutal army in the 40K line) The basic set includes a set of Space Marines and a bunch of Tyranids (think of Aliens, but badder, bigger, and hungrier), with a series of short scenarios with growing difficulty, so you can learn the rules easily and fast There`s also a line of books, based on the background. I reccomend the Gaunt`s Ghost series, as it gives a very painless introduction to the setting, through the story of an Imperial Guard regiment

Space Orks need a real codex rewrite. What was done to them was in no way funny. They pulled all the funny stuff between 2nd and 3rd edition and replaced it with a British punk/gang feel. Randomized jet pack troops, snotling warp-cannon, pulsa rockets. 2nd edition Orkz were worth playing, they had the Waaagh!
Space Marines and Chaos tend to get far to much attention. I also don't like the new Imperium centric style of the Codexes. If I'm playing a Xenomorph army I want the codex to be full of that army's dogma.
They also need to write all the bloody codexes together and find some kind balanced unified point structure. Shooting armies were supposed to be the improvement in current edition but I don't see it. Close combat and heavy weapons are still kings of the game.
Basically I have almost nothing but jaded withering scorn for Warhammer 40k. Then again I may just be bitter that Necron's only have 1 Troop selection and limited access to Wargear, while Space Marines get drop pods, DROP PODS with GUNZ!

I had a passing interest in minis games up to the point Gorkamorka was released. Out of curiosity, I gave it a try and was hooked (still have the game, and its two gangs formed the basis of my current and admittedly small, Ork army). After Gorkamorka, I bought the 3rd edition boxed set, the one with Space Marines and Dark Eldar.
Still later on, I found a 2nd edition boxed set, the one with the Armageddon booklet. Mostly because I`m a completist... The minis were too simple for my taste, and the orks and gretchins were kinda goofy. Still haven`t painted them, they don`t fit with the current figs. However, I was lucky and found the 2nd edition Codex, just for fun,
I suspect we`ll have to wait until later this year for the new Codex Orks, probably released in Orktober. I`m primed to get some new trukks, as the current ones were designed for smaller orks on small bases, there`s no way a mob fits in the trukk without some of them falling off!!
Still, I find the current army`s style balanced enough for my taste. brutal, check; funny, check. Numerous, check! Now, if we get boar riding orks in the main codex, so much the better! If the spider riding goblins came back to Warhammer Fantasy, why not a new set of Boar riderz?

Shooting armies win. I'm playing proof. And if Chaos and our misguided bretheren get all the attention, it's because we really are the gateway to the game, as well as the most customizable armies. It's fairly rare for someone to look at a game and say 'I want to play the aliens'. Anyway...
I play Iron Warriors Chaos. Which means, for those who don't know, that I get to play with more, heavier guns than most any other army but Imperial Guard tank armies.
The keys to making a shooting army work are variety, precedence, and consistency.
Variety - No shooting army will function with only a single gun, unless you happen to have access to an army list full of machine-gun rail cannons. It's key to have a wide variety of guns to call on, from rapid-fire, low strength guns like Lasguns, all the way up to devastating cannons and artillery.
Precedence - You won't win by just shooting at what shows up. Shoot where you will make the most effective use of your guns. Start at the top, with your high strength weapons, and look for in range targets that are harder to hurt with other guns. A prime example is a Land Raider. Lascannons, Rocket Launchers, Railguns, and so on are perfect for this job. Bolters are not. Lascannons are wasted on lightly armored infantry. This also means taking a more difficult shot when it will destroy something more valuable. A land Raider is always a harder shot than a predator, but if destroyed, it will hamper your opponent more. It's a judgement call, and a hard one to make, but knowing when to strike for the heart will win you more games than anything else.
Consistency - It's no use to shoot at four different targets in four different turns unless you're killing them like a Marine Sniper shooting at quadrapalegics. If you fail to destroy that Fire Prism in the first round, keep pouring the fire into it. Don't switch to another target out of frustration.

Space Marines are very forgiving to first-time painters. Just start with metal marines, if you don`t like how the fig ends, just drop it into a jar with some nail-paint remover and after a few hours, use an old toothbrush and soap to remove the few remaining bits of pain and start again.
Also, there`s a lot of free paint guides in the www.games-workshop.com page, just check each army and the articles in Black Gobbo.
A friend of mine just started painting last week, and he was amazed of the results he got in his fiorst attempt (I was coaching him).
The best minis to start are, curiously, the ones that have the most detail. It`s almost like painting by numbers...

I love that strip.
Both in-game and out-game humor works for me.

Oh, and the new Ork Codex has been announced!
`Am so `appy!
The new figs look awesome (and that`s a word I barely use)! It seems that the Feral Orks will be integrated with the rest of the troops, including wyrdboys, and maybe boarboyz!!
