Can anyone tell me why Neutron Stars have a magnetic field?

I thought they were just neutrons packed together and the only thing keeping them from collapsing was Neutron Degeneracy Pressure.

I got a sheet from my Astronomy lecturer about it, but yeah, It's a little confusing. sweatdrop

Neutron stars have a thin, but highly ionized atmosphere that I believe is the primary cause.

Hmm. That would cause it.

If I hadn't lost the sheet I was given I'd post it so that you people could help me make sense of it sweatdrop

Why neutron stars have magnetic fields is something that's still being inventigated. I don't think anyone really knows forsure. What VoijaRisa
said does sound about right. ... Personally I don't know many details about neutron stars, so I can't really say.
