I've noticed people bring these up every once in a while, and as I'm a huge history nerd (as well as GLBT book nerd), the two of them together = heaven for me. So, d'you think we could start a rec thread for gay historical fiction? Nonfiction works too, of course. ;D

I'll be stalking this thread...I've been looking for a book in this genre for quite some time and have been left hanging. I especially like the idea of gay Westerns ((I liked them before Brokeback Mountain!)), so if you find any let me know please. whee

There are some ones about Ancient Greece that are pretty good. I'm currently reading "The Persian Boy" which is about Alexander the Great told from the perspective of his lover. And I was reading "The Rise and Fall of the Sacred Band of Thebes" which is about the famous fighting force formed entirely of male couples that were one of the greatest fighting forces Greece had ever seen. The latter of the books isn't that well written but somewhat enjoyable.

I own The Persian Boy but have yet to begin reading it. The second one you mentioned sounds interesting, as well; ah, history = <3.

Sarah Waters writes great historical fiction, mostly Victorian era, but The Night Watch, her most recent book, is set during the Second World War, and is amazing heart
The Persian Boy sounds interesting, I've read some LGBT fiction set in that era before, though I can't remember who by, and it was really good.
Does 1950's pulp fiction count as historical, as it was contempory when it was written? It's mostly very good 3nodding

Sappho, from the Island of Lesbos. Etymology tells us we have made the term "lesbian" from Sappho's writings.
However, Catullus ruins this by naming his lover Lesbia evil
Vivemus, mea lesbia, atque amemus let us live, my lesbia, and also let us love.

Already mentioned these in the book recs thread, but ... Brethren: Raised by Wolves and Matelots: Raised by Wolves by W. A. Hoffman - http://www.amazon.com/Brethren-Raised-Wolves-W-Hoffman/dp/097210982X/ - A beautiful love story with unique, multidimentional (and somewhat messed up, but that just makes them more interesting) characters and wonderful prose. Moving, exciting, witty, philosophical, detailed, and oh so very, very pretty. My love for this book knows no bounds. Ransom and Winds of Change by Lee Rowan - http://www.amazon.com/Ransom-Lee-Rowan/dp/1905393709/ - A nicely paced romance and a decent adventure story. Not particularely complex or fast-paced, as the main focus is not the adventure but the developing relationship, but providing for a nice atmosphere of tension and urgency to back the romance. Discreet Young Gentleman by M. J. Pearson - http://www.amazon.com/Discreet-Young-Gentleman-M-Pearson/dp/0971708959/ - A light, elegant, satisfying read with good dozes of romance and mild angst, and a touch of humour. Not very plotty or complicated, but very enjoyable nontheless. A Gentleman of Substance by Julia Talbot - http://www.torquerepress.com/cart/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=97- Same as above, more or less. Witty, sexy, elegant, all sorts of pretty and very satisfying, if not particularely complex.

L. Langley's The Tin Star. It's modern, not historical, but it is about cowboys (ranch hands?). Not much of a plot, and the characters, while likable, seemed rather two-dimensional to me, but it's steamy and romantic and has enough conflict and tension to make it a quick and interesting enough read, if nothing especially notable.
