All right, so I recently got this idea for a story that I was all excited about... However, since then I've been kind of stuck. I've mainly been doing a lot of research on the setting, but I haven't actually been able to write anything. I don't know if I'm just afraid to start or if I need to get the right inspiration...
Anyway, does anyone have any ideas on how to help? What do you do to get your creativity flowing? Is there a certain place you like to be when you write or an exercise you try before starting? Tips on what works for you would be much appreciated. smile

You might want to try being away from others by either putting some headphones with music loud enough to take off the bulk of the exterior noise or simply find yourself a private room with some music, art or other stimuli. These things seem to work for me but do not always work for others. The key thing is to gather a set of music to reflect each of you characters so that you can keep in the mood to write scenes with them in but you might find it better to write something else in the meantime as you cannot force ideas in limbo.

Nope, that was actually very helpful. Thanks! Yeah, and I've been worried about forcing myself to write too. Nothing good ever comes out of that.

Talking to a friend helps. Well, talking to me helps for my friend. Often, someone else can think of things that would fit. Also, do a plot outline. It helps to know where your characters will be going when. And, if, in the end, you have to force something out, do several drafts until you have what you want.

I have several friends who are writers, so sometimes we'll just go to a park and wander around and feed ducks while talking about our stories and sharing suggestions. It's quiet, relaxing, and usually inspiring.

Make an outworld, with blue skinned reptiles or something.

The same thing is happening to me right now.
It took me forever thinking through the plot, and then I thought about how to begin... well, I'm on chapter 2 so nothing has REALLY happened yet. And I'm stuck.
I suggest a Writer's Digest book called Beginnings Middles and Ends. I own almost the whole series, wonderful books.
And they offer lots of ideas on how to being. Vague enough for inspiration, but specific enough for knowing what they're talking about.
