Discuss? What makes you literate.

Well, in Internet terms, I usually use it to mean anything that's intelligent and not chatspeak, or the usual unintelligence associated with peoples' posting on the Internet.
So essentially, capitalization, punctuation, grammar, etc. Rather than the dictionary definition of being able to read and write -- we use it loosely, obviously. Because most of the time, the individuals that are "ur so kewl and zomg i lurv ____ heart heart " are in fact literate by dictionary definition IRL, but for some unknown reason choose not to be that way online. :[

Nifty thread idea.
What makes me literate, you ask?
Well, here's one example for you to chew on...
I used to participate in several IRC trivia chat rooms back in the day, and people didn't like playing with me, because I used to get the right answers AND correct capitalization. It irks me to see any country, person, etc. without a capital letter at the start.
Down with l33t speech and laziness! Type!

This IS a cool idea.
As for myself, I would have to say I define being literate as having some meaningful thought to convey on a topic, and being able to express it in a way that does it some justice.
In my opinion, even if a post has a great idea behind it, doing a shoddy job of expressing that idea by using ridiculous 'shortcuts' like replacing vowels with numbers will detract from it considerably, and I won't even want to bother reading the result. Pretty much the only time I use things like "ZOMG!" are when I'm joking around. ^^
Plus, it's just fun to say that. I do it in real life, too. Zomguh! XD

Unfortunately I don't speak "chat speak." I'm usually left scratching my head on such things like " ZOMG." I have just been raised to be eloquent. What makes me literate? It would have to be that I know what I'm saying and what those words mean. I didn't get the nickname "Dictionary" for nothing in highschool.

Sure you can, but it still comes down to how you present yourself on the internet. It's like chooing what clothes you want to put on for a trip- do you want to look nice and presentable, or do you want to look frumpy?
It's a fact that people judge by apperance, even when they shouldn't, and online your appearance is dictated by your speech, how you type, if not what you say. That said, would you rather appear as a netspeak fool or a literate scholar?
It all comes down to presentation, regardless of your actual intelligence level.

Starbranded I'm usually left scratching my head on such things like " ZOMG." Which brings up an important question that I never thought to ask before. What does the Z in 'zomg' stand for? o_O *scratches head*...

I am a very literate RPer and I use 'lol', 'OMG', 'roflmao', ect. all the time. If you're in a rush to do something else I can understand that but leet and chatspeak that isn't really needed is dumb, for lack of a better word.

I consider myself literate but say things like "zomg", "lawl", and stuff like that all the time.
But I don't bother with people who
tp lk ths.
I don't mind internet slang creeping into conversations but I hate when vowels are dropped to "save time".

My heart is a fist drenched in blood...
I consider myself, for the most part, a literate but I do tend to use "omg", "wtf", etc. but only when I'm talking with my friends over the internet. Otherwise, when I hear someone use chatspeak in real life, I cringe. Especially when I hear "jk" being used every which way I go. I just can't stand it being heard because I'm a writer and I love the English language.
I guess if it's over the internet, it's fine. But in real life, no. I don't think it is.
... My soul will rise again

I define "literate" as spelling out your words completely, and having as few spelling errors as possible.
That said, I'm a poor speller (at this moment I have a word document open so I can look things up before posting), and I do think that if the moment calls for it, things like OMG, TMI, and LOL can be used, so long as not in excess. And really, I only reserve them for moments of high excitement.
Normally when I tell someone that they are illiterate, they berate me and say that "fo cors im literate, im psting on gaia u f**. what u talkn about. it's jus teh way ple talk."
Yes. What an intelligent way to win that argument.
It causes me physical pain to write like that. gonk It's so disgusting, I can hardly even figure out ways to screw it up that badly.

A literate would have to spell most of the words in the English language, use proper capitalization and punctuation. I consider myself a literate, but I'll still use OMC (Oh my Carlisle) once in a while. I have awful grammar though, and it can't be helped.

Im not sure about others, but to me, illiteracy is annoying. It is perfectly fine if someone is not exactly the best speller out there, but everyone should know how to put a sentance together... we've been learning it since we were children. I do not believe that there is anything wrong with 'chat speak' as long as thats not all they know. When on IM or what not, i use terms like lol,wb, ttyl... but i keep it to a minimum. Most people these days though have become so lazy and ignorant... it can be really quite sad. I have always been kosher to proper grammer but i know that not everyone else is, but to me what i would consider 'literate' is the ability to coherantly turn thoughts and ideas into sentances. And i find at times too that because of the people i converse with aren't able to hold a conversation on my level... im forced to dumb myself down so they can understand me. And as pathetic as that may be, its the way of the world.
