A friend pointed out to me yesterday that "Survival" is now out on DVD in the UK. Finally, a new Seventh Doctor DVD smile

New McCoy DVDs are always welcome, though I would have much preferred Greatest Show in the Galaxy or Dragonfire. It's kinda nice that they've put out the first and final stories featuring Ainley's Master in back-to-back releases.
Anyway, what are your thoughts on the story? I don't remember Survival too well, except for certain highlight scenes. I used to always get annoyed by Ace's whining about Perivale, so I think I was immediately predisposed to disliking a story actually set in Perivale!
Next two coming out are Robot and Timelash. Can't wait for Robot... more Harry Sullivan! As for Timelash... gonk

I can remember when it first aired here people were complaining about how they teleported back to Perivale at the end when you were supposed to be taken home. They missed the point that they returned right beside the TARDIS, and the signifigance of their dialogue then. The TARDIS was home to them both now, and that was where they came back to! I always really liked that last speech. I think Colin was a tad envious of Syl getting such a good farewell speech when he got stuck with that echoing gripe about "Carrot juice??"

I liked Survival, mostly because of the wildness and the cats. Have Curse of Fenric on DVD, though. Glad Survival is out. The one I'm really waiting for, though, is a Pertwee called The Time Monster.

I wish they'd just bring out all the Seventh Doctor stories... but then I am trying to make a music video of them so maybe I'm biased.
I haven't got Survival yet and I only remember the last little chunk that I saw on YouTube. I plan to buy it in the Summer when I have money again.
Actually, I think the Seventh is doing pretty well in the DVD arena! At least in terms of the percentage of his stories that are on DVD now, in comparison to the other incarnations.

Haven't had time to watch it yet, but I have the novelisation. I liked *that* storyline, so we'll see what the original is like. I've only seen the very end of the story, with the voiceover; and the bit with Ace cherishing the Doctor's hat - I really wish I could find a hat like that on Gaia, but I digress...
I'll let you know when I finally catch up with the DVD.

The closest you'll come to it here is that Chess Hat--but it's more like Buster Keaton's porkpie hat. Mind you, #7 could be a bit Keatonesque at times... smile

Got round to watching it a couple of weeks ago (how time flies!). I really liked it. I liked the Master, who was being suitably creepy and cunning. And now I know what Perivale looks like - to me it's always been just a name on the Tube map.
The extras were interesting, including a discussion of where the series might have gone and what might have become of Ace, had the series not been cancelled. There were also some amusing outtakes where Sophie Aldred sneezes all over Sylvester McCoy; where she stands on his foot in her clod-hopping Doc Martens; where Sylvester McCoy fails spectacularly to get on a horse and drops his juggling balls and where random people wander past in the background, ruining a shot.
With any luck, it won't be years befor the Beeb releases Dragonfire, or Greatest Show in the Galaxy, or even Happiness Patrol smile

I bought the DVD. Yay! I made the family sit round and watch it with me.
The most surprising thing for me was how short Survival is, only 3 episodes. It's so much sharper and more succinct than most classic episodes. I think it stands up pretty well, it's a good episode, but it feels so weird watching it and knowing it was the 'last'.

Technically, Ghost Light was set in Perivale, and that aired before Survival. Simultaneously amusing and disturbing. GSitG was just disturbing.

The Survival R1 DVD hasn't quite come out in the U.S. yet. I'm surprised about all the positive responses to the story... I actually thought it was one of the weaker ones from Season 26. My order of preference is:
Fenric > Ghost Light > Survival > Battlefield
I never quite figured out why the Master was hanging out with the Cheetah people and had funky glowing eyes and fangs.

You really put Battlefield after all of those? But it has the Brigadier!

I was actually disappointed by Battlefield. Before I saw it, when I'd just heard about it, I thought Brigadier + Demons + Explosions + Knights = MOST ENTERTAINING EPISODE EVER! But actually it seemed like it only got halfway there. They just didn't use the best bits enough, especially the Brigadier. He spent half the time just getting there and then seemed to be mostly in the background. The armies seemed a bit useless too, mostly hanging around until people had walked to places and back again.
I loved the female Brigadier! Her together with that knight bloke were my fav characters in it, definitely. But then the lady who played her is just generally great in everything I've seen her in. She plays a similar role in Red Dwarf too. She had the best lines in Battlefield, I'd say. I mean I liked the episode but it felt like it should be re-done with slightly more time and money and sharper action. Survival I liked slightly better because it was shorter so those flaws didn't show up so much, though it wasn't really the greatest final episode ever which I would have loved it to be. And the Master almost didn't need to be there.

As I recall, he was looking for a way to extend his lifespan again, because he wasn't in a Time Lord body any more. He must have really gotten obsessive with that search as his stolen body aged, to end up mutating himself down to a glob of ooze that possesses other people's bodies.
He had the eyes & fangs because he was letting himself become one of the Cheetah people--but in doing so he was also losing himself, becoming less intellectual & more animal-like. He didn't admit this fact to himself, of course.
Do you think the Cheetah People were related to the Tharils?

Mike Yates You really put Battlefield after all of those? But it has the Brigadier! Yeah, and it also had a cool-looking blue-horned monster. It still sucked. I expected better from Ben Aaronovitch (the guy who also wrote Remembrance of the Daleks). I actually never thought about a connection between the Cheetah People and the Tharils before. Tharils are more like lion people, right? I guess they could be distant cousins or something...
