Guideline #2 is arguably the most important of our rules and the basis for all of the others.

Its meaning was recently questioned, so it seems fitting to provide a more detailed description of what we mean when we say that all members of this guild must be courteous to one another.

First: respect one another. Start out with the assumption that everyone in this guild is here because he or she is possessed of an inquiring mind and, like you, has put some thought into his or her positions and beliefs. Respond to one another as though this were the case. If you find yourself steaming and mentally calling the person an idiot, we recommend not posting.

Second: If you wish to argue, argue with the idea, not the person.

Third: Keep in mind the thought that you might be wrong, and that even if you are right, you are not called upon to convert all others to your mode of thinking.

You don't have to agree with someone to respect their point of view. You don't have to change your opinion if you think someone else is wrong, but neither do they have to change theirs if they think you are wrong. Sometimes, it's best just to agree to disagree.

Ideally, everyone will come away with a better understanding of the issue at hand, no matter what their views.

Simply put: Respect others.
