I am very poor with sight reads. I am a junior playing with the senior competitive band and we have to do a sight read at nationals.
Do you have any tips for me when learning sight reads? Keep in mind, sight reads involve only being able to look at the piece for 1-15minutes, on the spot.
(Note: I have more trouble with recognizing notes and fast paced rhythms)

Recognizing notes comes after playing music for a long time - what are you not familiar with? High register? Accidentals? Key signatures? Practice those things, Filas' Top Register Studies for flutes is a good one, but it takes a very long time to get through the book and I highly doubt your sight reading piece will be that difficult.
Just isolate your problems, it's about focusing, reading ahead of your music, and not spontaneously combusting. burning_eyes

I use that Filas Top Register book too. It's a really great book for getting your top register into good shape. And there are so many accidentals. >>

The simplest and hardest thing about sight-reading is to focus on WHERE YOU ARE in the music and not look so far ahead you lose yourself.

also, if you tap out the rhythms, you get a feel for what the song will be like. Look for accadentals, key changes, and time signature changes. Look for any notes that may be hard to read on the spot like a high B... that way you can figure out what it is and make a mental note of what it is before you play. Count throughout the entire song. The last thing you need is to get lost in the middle of the song. I hope that helped...

<_< I really want to burn that book... scream It's not that bad. But I can't play it in front of my family.....they make me leave. It's helped me a lot with high register, even though it isn't always the most enjoyable book to play.

I started piccolo with Taffanel and Gaubert's Big Daily Finger Exercises. And when it got high, I would go an octave lower.

I luff that book. For real. My old private lesson teacher made me have to play it 100% perfectly. I am in transition for teachers. And I want to burn that book, too.

You could tap your foot to keep the rhythm. And for the sight reading... I don't know if I can help you with that. I memorize the notes but that's because I've been taking piano all my life. (and flute for 3 years) ^^

practice sight reading. Think S.T.A.R.S when you are looking over the peice:
S - Sharps or flats in the key signatre T - Time Signature and tempo markings A - Accadentals R - Rhythms S - Signs (including articulation, dynamics, repeats, and endings
I hope this helps. I remembered seeing this in Essential Elements 2000 book 2.
It makes me laugh looking back at the exercises in the book and remembering back to middle school band. lol. biggrin
