What do you prefer when riding? Just regular tennis shoes, tennis shoes with gators, paddock boots with gators, just paddock boots, or tall boots? Why?
To be honest, I don't really see why people wear tall boots if they aren't in the show ring. They just seem so much more restrictive, even when broken in, and unless they fit perfectly, can end up rubbing you and making you sore.
Most of the time, I wear gators and paddock boots. I love gators, because they give me some stick and I can get my legs real snug up against the horse like a tall boot would, but stretch and move with me, unlike a tall boot.
EDIT; GATORS = HALF CHAPS. Sorry for the confusion. sweatdrop

So... if gators are half-chaps, what are just 'chaps'? What I use is called chaps by the saddlery I bought them from, and I've never heard the term half-chaps before, but by the sounds of it it's probably the same thing as what you guys have... O_o
I wear short riding boots with chaps, because: 1. Not as hot as tall boots. 2. Easier to replace either chaps or short boots if something goes wrong/breaks, whereas finding tall boots with a perfect fit along the entire length is harder. 3. Tall boots take ages to remove (or at least, mine did). 4. It just happened that way. xd
I wouldn't mind wearing tall boots again even just for riding, though, I guess they'd be more useful if you're walking over slushy ground and such (or washing your horse and managing to get water all over yourself xd ).

Interesting, are full chaps generally western-only? That would explain why I've never seen them here, and what you call half-chaps are always referred to as just chaps here. 3nodding

there are "english" full chaps too (my coach has a pair), but theyre basically just like western ones just without the fringe and bling. ive never seen them worn in shows tho. its kinda like the half chap thing, half chaps arent aloud in shows either (at least not here). my coach only uses them because theyre easier and comfier than breeches, haha.

I ride in paddock boots and half-chaps. I don't own tall boots, because I don't show there's no point in me having them. I only just got my half chaps for Christmas, I'd never ridden in them before this year. (Mine are the same kind as the example posted, but hunter green.) I never want to go back to riding without them now. xd
My paddock boots are really awesome, WAY better than my last two pairs. They're Tuff Rider, I think, and they're wide. Laces in the front and a zipper in the back. 3nodding

Where'd you get em?

Where'd you get em?I bought them at Toll Booth, a local tack shop. They were decently priced there. I'm sure they're available online too, but I like trying on things that need to fit well in person (or find the ones I want and then buy them cheaper online xd ).

I would love to ride in tall boots, did when I was younger, but I can't find them to fit my calves and also not be too tall. I'd have to buy custom made boots, which is way beyond my pocket book.
I ride in paddock boots and half-chaps most of the time, but also if it's not too hot in schooling chaps (that's the English term for long chaps). Schooling chaps are nice because they give that leather-to-leather stick in the thigh as well as the calf (half-chaps).

I used to ride in my tall boots all of the time because they were all that I had. Once I got half chaps and paddock boots I started riding in them all the time because, as articubone said, chaps are cheaper to replace than tall boots! I do try to ride in my tall boots on occasion just to make sure they still fit (bad experience at a show last year when I realized that my calves had grown and my boots had not XP
And Tuff Riders hm? I'll have to look into those... I'm in the market for new paddock boots, as replacing the duct tape holding my current pair together every two weeks is getting old really quickly...

I love my tall boots! I have a pair of used Effinghams that I wear when it's dry, since the tread isn't that good anymore, but they are beautiful and quite comfy. (Calfskin=*drool*). Recently I bought a brand-new paoir of field boots that have been gracing my shelf in my room until it's showtime. I wear my field boots as fashion boots as well if I know I won't be walking too much. Usually at the barn I will wear ride/hiking boots with my suede chaps. I hate suede, personally. So hard to clean, and not nearly as nice as leather.
