Spears have been used, either as throwing spears (i.e., the javelin), or as a thrusting weapon, or as hunting tools, across the world, throughout all of recorded history. There has been evidence of spears being used even in the prehistoric ages by primitive humankind. And there is even proof of spear manufacture and use for hunting by the Pan troglodytes verus subspecies of the Chimpanzee near Kédougou, Senegal. Spears are one of the most primitive, yet practical and effective weapons used before modern times.

Personally, spears - namely throwing spears, such as the Roman Pilum - are my most favourite type of medieval weapon.

If you admire the use of spears as weapons, as well, then I have something for you: I found a young petition on Gaia for spears and shields, yesterday. I gladly threw in (no pun intended) my signature without a moment's hesitation. The owner of the petition asked me to tell my friends about it. So, if you admire spears, I encourage you to please, click here and give your signature in support of spears and shields on Gaia. smile

Spears are one of the Most resilient Weapons ever devised. One of the more advanced applications of Spears today was released in Popular mechanics a while back, they are Tungsten Spears dropped from space and have a similar effect to Nuclear weapons on Impact.

The concept of the Bow fits along the lines of Kinetic Acceleration devices such as railguns, and it will be interesting to see what comes of the "Sword".

Perhaps biblical weapons weren't as primative as we assume?

For some odd reason the Tungsten spear thing makes me think of The Lance of Longinus in Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Those "Rods from God" are a clear sign of just how moronic we are, or perhaps were, when it comes to weapons.

How in the hell do you come up with something like a nuke but you can't come up with something as inherently simple as dropping something from so high a height that the impact is devastating. We've been fearing such an occurence via meteorites from before the nuke was invented. >>

I know this is a common example, but I personally think that the future sword will either be a lightblade or a vibro-blade (a weapon whose blade is connected to some kind of motor that makes it vibrate very slightly, but with a great deal of intensity. The vibration lets it cut deeper and with less resistance from whatever it is cutting into). Guns of any kind are the new bows. Missiles and kinetic weapons (ex. tungsten spears) are the new spears.

Anyway, I love classical weapons, and spears, halberds, staves and swallows (just like a spear, halberd, etc., with deadly points at both ends instead of one) are no exception. I'll sign the petition. ^^

At that point in our world's history, there is no evidence of mankind pondering dropping objects from the cosmos. Man could probably not even imagine the destructive capacity of the nuclear bomb. The simple idea of the spear comes form sensibility. Reach+sharp object=advantage. It would not be long before even more advanced versions were developed... however...

I prefer swords. Especially the katana, a weapon that not only allows good reach (not nearly as good as a spear), but has the ability to easily parry, and even slice in half the spears of antiquity. Yet, this is not an argument as to which type of weapon is better. I feel, though, that spears are simply an example of early human ingenuity.
