I have no fursona, yet I really do kinda want one.
I know people say "It'll come to you" or suggest my favourite animal, but neither of these methods really worked for me.
I want this thread to serve two purposes:
1) Is the fact that I don't have one a problem? Should I get off my lazy a** and find one?
2) I was wondering how other people came up with their own fursonas.
If anyone else wants to gripe about similar issues go ahead, it's not like I'm going to stop you...

I don't think it's really a problem if you don't have a fursona... and I don't think you can make one up in a spare hour one afternoon, either. For me it took several years to develop into what it is now... I think for me, it all started with my love for cats. Because we have several cats at home, I think I've picked up some feline tendencies from them... And it's kind of grown from there...

Bluetabbycat I don't think it's really a problem if you don't have a fursona... and I don't think you can make one up in a spare hour one afternoon, either. For me it took several years to develop into what it is now... I think for me, it all started with my love for cats. Because we have several cats at home, I think I've picked up some feline tendencies from them... And it's kind of grown from there... Well that's good. I know obviously one can't just think one up and be done with it, I just feel kinda silly without one. wink

Hmm... I guess you could say I have one but I don't use it. I don't think it's really a big deal, but to some people it's thier life and if you don't have one, your not part of 'the crowd'. Meh, that's just me.

Wow, you sound exactly like I once did! I couldn't find my fursona, no matter how hard I tried. Everything I came up with felt fake, or forced, and my favourite animal wasn't a representation of me at all! (At least I got a bunch of good roleplaying characters out of this search ^^) Eventually I just gave up, kind of resigning myself to being fursona-less.
A couple days later, I was doodling in my English book when I drew a, anthropomorphised Cheshire Cat. I was like "Hey! That's cool! I'll make him into a character!" It was only after I both made him a character and coloured him in on the computer that I got that first feeling of "this is it". I was a little dodgey about calling him my fursona, just because of the luck I'd had with that in the past, but eventually... I just couldn't really ignore it. It felt *right*.
The point of all this being... Maybe you can't force it, just like I couldn't. Maybe you can't "make" a fursona either. Yours might just have to come to you, you know? ::shrug:: Just... don't give up hope. You'll know it when it's right. : )
As far as people looking down on you goes, well, don't let it bother you. For every one who thinks "loser", there'll be 10 or more who don't care at all and will take you just as you are. Like the people here will, it seems. ^^ Don't be bothered too much. We're all on your side.

I never fully had a fursona till I came to gaia and wanted to get into the furry subculture here. Before that I just used to do roleplay on forums and sites.. most of the time as a black or white wolf, or foxes because all of them match my personility.. so when I came here I just thought the best way to express my fursona was to mesh all my fursonalities together.. which is why Im a white and black wolf-fox hybrid ^^

Try doing some quizzes if you find any.. about what type of furry you are. They don't tell you anything because quizzes are a load of crap in my opinion but I read what it says at the end about the different furries.. try and match up things about you and the particular anthro.

Oh yea, that sounds an interesting idea, you don't know where I might be able to find such quizzes?

The one I really liked, and which had very descriptive results. I will post them here for you to look at.
Big Cat Furry: leopard, puma, cheetah, panther etc
Herbivore Furry: horse, zebra, deer
Domesticated Furry: cat, dog
Reptile Furry: dragon, snake, lizard
