Trapped in Disneyland -- The Outside Adventures of Mary Riley
((I guess I would have to consider this to be a technical fan fiction because I will be referring on several occasions to characters that are not my own and are in fact owned by the Walt Disney Company. I do not yet know how intense later scenes will be so the rating is subject to change.
The first chapter is short, the second is moderate. Things pick up more after the third chapter and I will try my best to have at least one chapter up every week, though after chapter five I cannot guarantee anything since it took almost a year to find time to finish it. v.v Also, as a general rule I will try to fit each chapter into a post so they don't become broken up oddly.
So, please enjoy and don't forget to comment ^^.)) Chapter One "Look! Right there! See? She just vanishes!" exclaimed the boy as he frantically pointed to the screen in front of him. Mary watched in disbelief as a teen aged girl completely disappeared from the bizarrely empty Snow White's Scary Adventure line. One second she's next to the wall, reaching for something, and in the blink of an eye, she's gone.
"Can you play it again?" she asked.
"Well, yeah... but... she's not the only one. I have all the tapes from yesterday... and there's a ton of others." The boy gestured to a box on the desk.
"How many is a ton?"
"Including her... thirteen... " * * * * * * "Weird things have been happening here since the park first openned. A young woman disappeared in the first year. Mr. Disney was frantic to find her when he heard the news, but no one else was looking. No family, no friends. I don't think he ever gave up looking, but at some point he started talking to her, like she was in the room. There was never a trace of her. Every couple of years someone else would go missing, but no one ever tried to find them or seemed to miss them at all."
"And... how long have you worked at the park, Miss Bernett?" Mary asked.
"Call me Sarah. My grandfather was one of the cast members who was working the day Lillian Hesten disappeared. My mother worked here the day Vanessa Patterson never came off the Submarine, and... I was here yesterday. I know Helena Rashel. I know her whole family. They aren't even looking for her. She had waved at me as she was coming up to the ride, I was looking forward to talking to her, she loves it all so much. I waited... and waited... and when I saw her family, and they asked where she was... I knew. She's gone too." Sarah's eyes welled up again. The woman looked younger than she was. She was filled with the secrets that should never see the light of day. Mary patted her hand.
"I saw the tape of Miss Rashel's disappearance. She seems so familiar. I've only been working here for a year. Does she come often?"
"Once every three months with her family. Twice a month with her 'friend'. I'm glad lane wasn't here. Helena's sisters were really upset, but I can imagine Lane would have had the entire park turned upside down looking for her."
"Lane... is that the girl with the green hair?"
"Yep." Sarah pursed her lips and gave Mary a thoughtful look. "You've seen all of them, haven't you?"
"Yes. The youngest one was an eight year old girl."
"So young. I can't believe the park is doing this. This is supposed to be the Happiest Place on Earth. For crying out loud! All the dark clouds, all the characters disappearing, all the weird feelings, the utter cold... and now... children vanishing into thin air. I have been coving shifts left and right because no one wants to work anymore! Luckily there are severally fewer guests than normal. They'll probably shut us down if things keep up this way." Sarah's face was streaming with tears and she suddenly threw her arms around Mary and sobbed into her shoulder. Mary patted her head, and nervously scanned the empty cafe. Outside on Main Street none of the guests seems to have any interest in shopping, or eating, they aimlessly wandered into the parks, and passionlessly filtered into the rides.
"It's going to be alright Sarah. Everyone may have forgotten it, but this is still the Happiest Place on Earth, and I'm going to do anything I can to bring back the light." Mary smiled gently at her, lifting up her face. " I promise."
"I wanna help too." Sarah said, sniffling back her tears.
"Alright, but you can't tell anyone what's going on. Promise? We don't want anything to leak to the media and scare tourists away, or they really will shut us down. Right?"
"Right. I promise. I'd protect this place with my life." Sarah nodded and wiped the tears from her face. "Heh, look at me, bawling all over you."
"It's okay, I understand. I almost cried when the kid was showing me the footage from the security cameras this morning."
Sarah nodded, and smiled sadly.
"We'll find your friend, Sarah. I promise."

Chapter Two When Mary got home, the apartment was dark and her roommate was asleep, so she crept in as quietly as possible and went into her room. She seated herself at her grandmother's hand-me-down antique vanity table and as she gazed into the oval mirror, she unbraided her waist length copper hair. She took up her silver brush and groomed her thick, wavy curtain of hair.
Her eyes kept going back to the reflection of the full-length mirror beside her bed behind her. Of course the only thing there was the refection of her sitting at the vanity, as would be usual, but she felt that something was very off, like someone were watching... particularly through that mirror. She looked down at the silver hand mirror, searching for some sign of safety. she glanced quickly up into the reflection of her own amber eyes in the mirror. Her heart was racing as she attempted to assure herself that it was merely her imagination.
She set down her brush and headed into the bathroom she shared with Tommy, her roommate. Mary flicked on the light and almost jumped out of her skin. In front of her was a huge mirror, in an elaborate golden frame, almost covering the wall. Beside her reflection in the mirror was a girls dressed richly in a black and dark red gown. She had long dark brown hair and pitch black eyes.
"So you want to help us, do you?" demanded the girl in the mirror.
'Who are you?" Mary checked over her shoulder, but there was no girl there.
"I am Helena the Dark Princess and Heir of the Queen. I asked you a question."
"Helena? Helena Rashel?" Mary's head was spinning. The girl barely resembled the teen who she had seen vanish in the line for the Snow White ride. It was entirely unbelievable and Mary was certain she was dreaming.
"Don't answer with another question you twit. Just tell me how you are going to help us! I want to go home. My little sister, Meghan, is the only one who even remembers me. I want to go home. She's scared. My Lane is going to forget me. It's killing me. How are you going to help us? Tell me!"
"I don't know yet. Helena, I have no idea what's going on. I don't know how to help you... yet. I promise that I will though. I promise."
"That's not good enough!" Helena screamed. The mirror shattered at the corners, the cracks spreading inward like frost into the center of the mirror, and the Dark Princess was gone. Mary shook her head and switched off the light, went back to her room, undressed, and went promptly to bed. * * * * * * Swirling mist filled the stone corridors which wound with labyrinth-like corners. A huge, gothic rat maze and Mary was somewhere in it, completely lost in the mist. She had never seen this place before and had no idea how she found herself there. She was freezing and confused. It seemed like the mist was surrounding her now, reaching out to her. She was wearing a silken crimson A-line dress and matching crimson slippers, and her hair was down, cascading over her shoulders making her feel elegant, and fragile, and even more confused. She became suddenly very frightened and though she could barely see two feet in front of her, she started running through the corridors.
After what seemed forever in the twisting halls, it opened into what seemed like a crypt. All against the walls were lifeless floating corpse. Mary couldn't determine who they were, but she could make out their forms.
"They are alive." the words sprang from her lips though she had no idea how she knew this.
As quickly as she had discovered it, the image before her melted away and she was in a meadow, but not alone. The two most adorable children she'd ever seen were playing there. The younger of the two was a girl with burgundy hair and large green eyes and she was being tickled by the boy who seemed a few years older. Where the little the little girl was dressed like a gothic, Victorian porcelain doll, the boy's clothes were torn and stained with dirt, definitely well worn. His hair was shaggy and unbrushed, and hers was well kept, quite proper.
The little girl giggled and squirmed against the boy. Mary noticed the ravishing young woman, with remarkably long black hair, watching them fondly like a big sister. She was also dressed richly and her presence commanded certain respect and dignity. There was a blond girl near her, who was clearly some sort of adventurer in her worn pants and boots, battered leather jacket and fedora, and top which was once white, most likely.
The little boy picked up the girl and started spinning around with her. She shrieked and transformed into a little black kitten, jumped onto his head, lept off onto the ground, scampered behind the black haired girl, and turned back into a girl, peeking at the boy from behind the dark girl's skirt.
The boy gave her a big grin and held out his hand to her. * * * * * *

Mary woke with a start at the sound of banging on her bedroom door.
"Mary Leanne Riley! Why the hell is the bathroom mirror all ******** up?! Do you know how much it's going to cost to replace the glass? It's so coming out of your pocket!"
The use of Mary's full name was an indication that Tommy ment business. She jumped out of bed and tossed on her bath robe. She openned the door.
"What do you mean the mirror is 'all ******** up'?" Mary asked. Tommy grabbed her wrist and pulled her into the bathroom. At the sight of the shattered mirror she realized that the visit from Helena was not a dream."My god..."
"Don't try to say it wasn't you Mary, I heard you in here talking to yourself and this morning...well, this!"
"Oh, no, of course. I'll have it fixed. I'm really sorry, Tommy. I don't remember how I managed it, but I must have done it. Sleepwalking or something. I'm so sorry." Mary forced a smile and hugged hm, then hurried back to her room.

Chapter Three Sarah was already waiting in the Carnation Cafe, when Mary walked in she jumped up and hugged her.
"Did you see them?!? she exclaimed.
"Sarah, hon, before we get down to this, I need coffee... What the hell you mean 'Did you see them?' Who?"
"Them. I saw them in my dream. I saw you too. You look really pretty with you hair down."
Mary looked at her blankly. Sarah sat back down and pushed one of two cups across the table. Mary sat down in place. Shae absently took a sip of what Sarah had offered her, and it was oddly perfect. Not too hot or too sweet. She smiled at Sarah.
"Well, I did see them, why didn't I see you, if you saw me?" Mary took another sip and savored the soft note of hazelnut. "This is really good. Thanks." Mary noticed how Sarah blushed at the compliment and flet a little pulse in the back of her throat.
"I imagine that you didn't see me, but I saw you, because I'm still in tune to both worlds and you... you aren't very fond of the real world are you, Mary? I sware, you looked like a grown up, Irish version of Wendy."
Mary tried to swallow and make the pulse stop. "And, Miss Bennett, what might you have looked like last night?"
"I, uh, was still in my pajamas... that whole in tune with both worlds, I bet"
"You know, you really remind me of someone, but I just can't place it."
"I think I know." Sarah pulled her wallet out of her purse and opened it to a picture of her dressed as Alice. "I almost had the part here in the Park but I'm three inches too tall."
Mary smiled at her and committed to her coffee. They chatted idly about their jobs for twenty minutes or so before Sarah announced that she had to start work. Mary walked with her to a cast member area and waited for her to clock in, then walked her to her ride. Sarah hugged her and quickly kissed her cheek, then hurried off to change places with the other ride operator, leaving Mary quite dazed. She wandered through the Park and found herself in front of the Haunted Mansion.
The line was deserted, the cast members merely nodded as she passed through, until she reached the doom buggy line.
"Hey Mary. Are you working today?" the boy asked.
"Nope. I just wanted a little nap. Is that okay, or are you expecting a big crowd?"
"Fine by me, Mary." he said with a grim smirk.
Mary boarded a buggy, waited for the lap bar to be lowered, then streached out in her seat.
The beautiful house was all dressed up like The Nightmare Before Christmas, but in her eyes, the spirit of it was the same... colder now, like the rest of the Park. She closed her eyes and enjoyed the ride's soundtrack as she drifted back to sleep. * * * * * *

Mary stood in the darkened mansion. There were no doom buggies, or soundtrack, or Nightmare dressings. Soft voices floated from behind a secret door and a gentle green glow filtered from underneath it. Mary went to the door and carefully opened it. There was a little room she had never before seen on the ride, and it was tastefully decorated, much like the rest of the house. The dainty little girl and the lovely black haired lady were seated at a petite table surrounded by three carved ebony armchairs. A delicate tea set was arranged on the tale and the two girls were sipping at the porcelain tea cups in their hands.
Mary sat down in the third chair and poured herself a cup of tea. The black haired girl looked at her and smiled very slightly.
"I'm glad you decided to join us. Have a sip, it's delightful. Miss Aardwyn picked the blend herself." The dark lady said in her low, sultry way. Aardwyn, the little girl, smiled shyly at the compliment.
"Thank you, Mistress. I was going to use Aunt Sally's herbs, but I chose something fresher, from the grounds." Aardwyn chimed. Mary's eyes widened at the mention of Sally's herbs, as she remembered that they included Deadly Nightshade. There was a slight reassurance that the herbs were instead from the Mansion's grounds. Mary carefully sipped the tea an tasted a gentle hint of eucalyptus and mint.
"It's quite lovely. Thank you. ...I'm not sure why I'm here..."Mary spoke softly, trying to maintain the sort of polite, quiet nature of her hostesses.
"You seek to help us help our home, don't you?" questioned Aardwyn.
Mary was a bit startled by this reflection. "I suppose so. That is what I'm here for. I need to know what's going on first, though. I guess it's more a question of why all of us are here. To defend the land of enchantment."
"Uncle Jack and the boys are gone. So are Manor Mistress' ghosts, and Miss Rain's brother, Indy, and Tarzan, Jackidy's father... and so many others... all over the park. Our people are disappearing... and .... and I remember being outside ... my brother Michael, but I remember here too... Aunt Sally, Uncle Jack, and my little baby cousin. Everything is all wound together... and... I'm starting to forget Michael." Aardwyn said as she lowered her head. The Mistress reached over and tapped her playfully on the nose, and the child smiled softly.
"I'll help anyway I can to get you home." As Mary spoke, the little girls looked up with loathing.
"Michael killed himself last year. I have no home. I want my Uncle Jack and my boys." The child's words left a cold imprint on Mary's mind.
