The mortal world lies alongside Meifu where the humans and extraordinary beings live. Here those not yet shinigami and shinigami may roleplay. Bear in mind that existing shinigami should only use their powers during assignments and the knowledge of Meifu a secret.

The sounds of the city were silent; the world was at rest, as far as one could tell. The hush of restful slumber lay thickly over the shingled-roof houses and cultivated lawns, and in the sector of the district where the houses were mansions, the lawns immaculate gardens, this peace was - if anything - even more impermeable. It was as if these stately homes, with their obviously upperclass air, were daring any kind of night-fiend to disturb the serenity enforced by their carven-stone guardians, who fixed unblinking eyes outward from cloisters and rooftops and walls.

Behind a gate of wrought-iron vines, up a pathway made from crushed mother-of-pearl, a house in shades of north-sea grey stood imposing and unmovable in the thin night. From a room just beneath the peak of the steepled rooftop, in a room furnished with ribbon and lace, a young child sat huddled in her canopied bed, her knees drawn up to her chest beneath the blue silk nightgown, her small arms locked tightly around a worn, brown-velvet bear in her arms. The child sat with her back to the white-painted headboard of her bed, and the pale light that streamed through the white curtains at her window made her silver locks glow; in the dimness of the room, the child's wide, unblinking eyes were crimson red.

This wasn't the first night that the child had woken from the nightmares, where things shattered themselves without warning and terror-filled voices echoed in young ears. But she was getting older, and her mother wasn't here, so only Mister Bear was here to help her, and the child buried her face in the soft plush "fur" as she tried to forget the nightmares and go back to sleep.

Outside, the edge of the sky was beginning to lighten, dyed with the paling light of encroaching dawn.

When the sun finally crested over the horizon, there was a sound of locks unlocking just outside the door of the room; by the number of bolts and such that were undone, one might assume that the parents treasured the little girl indeed.

That the windows, as well, had bolts on the outside, said something else entirely.

A woman entered, then, her step light; there was a certain resemblance in her face that marked the child as hers, though they otherwise looked quite different-- Where the child had silver hair, the woman was a golden blonde, and her blue eyes were directly contrasted to the little girl's crimson gaze. Yet, the little girl - by now recovered from her pre-dawn fright, though still clutching her teddy-bear tightly - seemed happy to see her mother, climbing down from the four-poster bed to dash across the carpeted floor and hug her mother's legs.

"Mama!"

"Shh, Gabriele," soothed the woman, brushing back the child's hair. "It's all right... What's wrong, my love?"

"I had... a bad dream, Mama," admitted the child; though she wasn't crying at all, too used to the nightmares to do so, her voice was still muffled by her mother's violet dress. "Like before, and..." A pause, as her child's mind struggled to put the feeling she had into words.

"Like something bad is going to happen."

The woman's smile was sad, but she continued to stroke the child's silver locks with a mother's hand. "Don't worry, Gabriele; nothing bad can happen to you as long as you stay in here, all right?

"As long as you're in this room, you're safe."

"All right," nodded Gabriele, releasing her mother's dress and stepping back, Mister Bear still dangling from one small hand.

"Besides," said her mother, and her sad smile was almost hidden, to prevent her child from seeing it, "there's no being sad on your birthday, is there?"

He sank back into the shadows in the little corner of the room. People never see what they don't want to see.....take it as you will. The tall being with elven features sighed slightly, watching the little child. "Is that the one? Looks too young to exhibit that kind of power...." he muttered to his companion. Yes.....much too young the poor child....
