I know what it is, whipping yourself was often used for people to get closer to god, so the person was most likely a priest. in olden day's priests did whip themselves for the reason i stated.

i have the impression that you are referring to the Opus Dei.. if you have read of Dan Brown's book, the The Da Vinci Code, you would have recognized it.. but you don't have to believe everything that you have read, especially coming from a fictional book right? of course some of those are based on facts but some just came out of the writer's mind.. i bet you are asking for help because this might have confused you about your faith so i'll just give you a brief explanation about it..
Opus Dei is a church organization founded by a catholic priest, Josemaria Escriva.. i would not go any further into the history but will go directly to your question which is physically hurting the body done by priest and lay people.. this is what they call mortification.. it would describe what you have seen on that video but actually it was a bit too far.. that is not the main functoin of OPus Dei.. that was said to cleanse yourself from sins by putting yourself with the pain of our Lord Jesus Christ.. that was mostly wrong interpretation of the Opus Dei's main purpose.. OPus Dei is about reliving the life of Jesus and to do this you have to free yourself from the worldly temptaions which is the "material things" around us.. some have done so by hurting theirselves with devices called celice.. it was some kind of chain with thorns bent inwards.. but that wasn't exactly right since Opus Dei was more on spiritual mortification (don't know if i got that term right sweatdrop ) which involves fasting or sleeping on the floor, etc.. and besides, the pope wouldn't have recognize this organization if it involves severe physical torture.. you can do some more research about this org but i'd suggest look for those who have "theological basis".. don't misinterpret it.. what i mean is that search sources with the church's teachings on it so as not to direct you into more "faith confusion".. it could be dangerous you know..
well all i can say for now is stick to your faith if you must, read some catechism books written by the church or if you have doubts you can ask people who are of more knowledge, e.g. your parish priest or ministers.. to end this i have only one message for everyone: our body is created by God and each is said to be the Temple of God.. it is not for us to destroy.. so take good care of your bodies.. smile

Torento Horinsuasu I know what it is, whipping yourself was often used for people to get closer to god, so the person was most likely a priest. in olden day's priests did whip themselves for the reason i stated. i don't mean to offend you but you could have explained further.. this is a delicate matter 'coz it might affect someone's faith.. if not informed properly it could be dangerous.. also it is not only done by priests but also lay people.. (lay people means someone who is not ordained which is most likely us).. sorry about this comment..

i have an addition to my reply.. it is also possible that Opus Dei is not the only organization doing this kind of thing.. there are also cults doing this though i will not address Opus Dei as a cult because as i've said it is an organization..
